The village has historical connections with a cairn to the death of Macbeth in the woods nearby in 1057 as well as this 12th Century Peel signifying its strategic importance associated with ancient drove roads and various passes from the flat lands of Deeside northwards into Strathdon and the lands of Northern Aberdeenshire. The original defences are now held to be turf ramparts rather than a palisade and the large outer wall was found to be 18th century agricultural work rather than original barricades creating a moat. On the top of the large flat area is the foundation outline of a rectangular Halton House dating to the 15th century. A small car parking area is available for the visitor and there is a very informative information board provided by Historic Scotland. The motte can be seen from the road after crossing the Water of Nochty Bridge and after the right hand turn to Lost with its famous sign. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen. The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. Dunnottar Castle Jan86 142c13jhp Dunnottar Castle ruin winter January cloud clifftop Scotland Aberdeenshire sea coast spectacular stands proud on a strategically strong natural headland jutting out into the North Sea south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault. This photograph was taken in January 1986 and is scanned off a 645 transparency and was used as a Stirling Gallery postcard which is still being used and has sold over 200,000 cards. As a private property these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Chapel of St Mary’s has unclear dating history possibly held to go back to 911AD while the standing ruins are possibly 13th century. Nearby is part of a fortress of the Comyn Earls of Buchan of which little now remains and the chapel overlooks the south east end of a bird reserve on the Loch of Strathbeg. The Chapel of St Mary’s has unclear dating history possibly held to go back to 911AD while the standing ruins are possibly 13th century. Loanhead Daviot zxc4664jhp Loanhead Daviot Recumbent Stone Circle wind turbines Scotland history modern Aberdeenshire located near the village of Daviot, west of Inverurie on the B9001 Rothienorman Road. Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face. In the distance are a symbol of modern Scotland, the relentess encroachment of wind turbines-wonder if they will be around in 2000 years time.
