Dunnideer Auchleven Road fgh6979jhp Dunnideer Hillfort Castle fort arch Insch Aberdeenshire Scotland autumn Whitehouse road ancient ruin hilltop is a prehistoric site but the remains now visible were one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, built around 1260. Situated on one of two hills both of which show evidence of early use as fortified strongholds, they are near Insch in Aberdeenshire. It is accessed by a steep but short climb from a minor road to Clashindarroch Forest and there is a small signed carpark area. This autumnal view from the B992 Insch to Whitehouse road south and which passes through the village of Auchleven. Kinneff Kirk fgh2136jhp Kinneff Church Mearns Aberdeenshire Scottish Reverend Grainger Memorial interior has its famous claim to Scottish History as the hiding place for eight years of the Scottish Regalia spirited away by Mrs Grainger, the Minister wife, or one of her serving maids from Dunnottar Castle. They were saved thus from the clutches of Cromwell’s troops in 1652 during the siege of the castle when his troops were attacking the Scottish Royalist troops loyal to Charles 11. The current church was rebuilt in 1738 on the site of the original one consecrated in 1242. The North aisle and staircase were added in 1876. The bell dates from 1679 and came from Rotterdam. 17th century wall tablets in the church commemorate Sir George Ogilvy of Barras who was Governor of Dunnottar Castle during the siege and who organised the smuggling of the regalia out of the castle. On a personal note, I had the privilege of photographing a re-enactment of what is thought to be how it was done for the current coloured version of the Dunnottar Castle Guidebook. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation. This view is from the layby above Cockbridge before the start of the main climb over the Lecht. The summit of Lochnagar is just visible through the cleft in the hills directly above the Castle. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.
