Dunnottar Castle Fort Fortress Keep Stone Building Tower Aberdeenshire Scotland ruin on site standing proud on a spectacular headland jutting out into the North Sea south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault; viewed here is the castle Keep, the main guardhouse and above the only entrance gate and portcullis.
