Aurora Arc Active qwe1713jhp
Aurora Borealis Scotland photo winter Scottish arc active rays Deeside taken on the 12th January at 20.22 hrs 2012 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I captured using my Nikon D700 being one of the first photographed since end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens and ISO settings of 6400 which allows for much shorter exposure of 8 secs with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. This was a fairly low grade display with the arc showing patchy activity with rays breaking off at different points. A possible aircraft strobe light is visible on the left handside.

Aurora Borealis Torphins Scottish Northern Lights Plough stars green rays Deeside taken on the 1st October 2012 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this back quarter and probably the best display now photographed since end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens and ISO settings of 3200 which allows for much shorter exposure circa 6 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The light conditions were not perfect as the background light was from the full moon but dispels any myths that Aurora’s cannot be seen under such conditions. Looking magentic North with multiple rays coming off an arc at 00.36.14hrs UT [01.36.14BST] with an exposure of 14 secs. The Plough or Ursa Major is visible directly above with rays to the left beneath this constellation, a useful winter marker for locating displays with the street lights of Torphins on the right.

Taken in the garden looking westwards as activity starts behind clouds at 00.20.30hrs UT [01.20.30BST] with an exposure of 3.8 secs. Gaps in the clouds are miracles for otherwsie nothing of this display would have been visible. Although forecast on Spaceweather.com as likely to occur, it was northern watchers that were advised to be alert, usually a sign it will not reach the UK. The Auroral Oval however dropped southwards to the 60 latitude and graphic data minor to amber alert on AuroraWatch.co.uk suggested it was worth checking outside.

Sphinx & Great Pyramid Giza EG02012jhp
Giza Egyptian Sphinx Lion Head Khufu Khafre Great Pyramid Solar Museum this giant carved limestone lion statue with human head is somewhat of an enigma, but most likely carved out of an outcrop as an inspirational homage to the Pharaoh Khafre some 2500BC whose pyramid is directly behind it, although some attribute it to the previous Khufu who built the first and Greatest Pyramid. This huge prone lion figure with a human face faces the east to the rising sun and the modern day Cairo and is a very popular destination for the thousands that visit the Giza plateau and here viewed from the most accessible point on causeway from Khafre Pyramid to his Valley Temple and just visible is the roof of the Solar Barque Museum at the base of the Great Pyramid.

The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls.

Egypt > River Nile Cruise & Sites (8 files)

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Spring Daffodils Elgin WTN2012JHP
Elgin Cathedral River Lossie Spring Daffodils Moray Scottish Highlands Bridge was founded in 1224 although a substantial ruin now cared for by Historic Scotland remains one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Scotland aand viewed here from the spring flora on the banks of the River Lossie. The transepts with their buttressed west towers and parts of the tall choir and nave date from the fire of 1270 but subsequent destruction especially by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390 and later further destruction and neglect after the Reformation means we will never see this building in its true majesty.
