Aurora over Stone Circle SO0213981jhp
Scotland Aurora Borealis Orion Pleiades Corona green zenith celestial wings from Tomnaverie Bronze Age stone circle site near Tarland on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire Scotland to the west of Aberdeen. Unusually this evening of ongoing activity started around 16.00 hours as a major storm on 20th November 2003. This digital photo of a new surge in the display and strong development of a coronal zenith to the south the last of the digital photos was taken at 00.18.10hrsUT for 10secs and these cf139 digital photos were taken at 800ISO, I think I felt the power of the display justified a stop down from my usual 1600ISO setting hoping perhaps for better noise control. In hindsight this was to be one of the last major storms I witnessed on Deeside to date, 2018 culminating for me at Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle near Tarland until after midnight, busy evening and in a sense the most spiritual experience I had photographing Aurora displays. I imagine those in the Bronze Age, without light pollution issues, would have often seen them as well. I had to leave Crooktree at 18.30 to teach at Aboyne where my photography students got dragged out to witness the continuing display and then went from there to Tomnaverie. The evenings’ displays were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film photos started at around 17.40hrsUT. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 15.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa.

Stone Circle Aurora Borealis Corona Orion flanker red ray Tarland Deeside winter Scotland Tomnaverie recumbent and flankers of the Bronze Age site near Tarland on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire Scotland to the west of Aberdeen. Unusually this evening of ongoing activity started around 16.00 hours as a major storm on 20th November 2003. This digital photo was taken at 22.57.10hrsUT for 13secs and these cf139 digital photos were taken at 800ISO, I think I felt the power of the display justified a stop down from my usual 1600ISO setting hoping perhaps for better noise control but this early exposure is on the short side. Merry Dancers Scottish display March green rays stars westerly view Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of 6th March, 2016 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen, starting around 8.00pm, this one taken at 21.42.29UT and is the first display since the one that spanned the New Year. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 24mm/28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 aperture and ISO settings of 3200 which allows for shorter exposures circa 12 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving events. The light conditions were sometimes not ideal because of passing snow flurries but the second burst of activity around 9.30 until nearly 10.00pm was in good clear conditions although cold. It had not been telegraphed from the Spaceweather site which was indicating possible displays caused by the solar wind but likely to occur much further North. During the early stage of the arc developing and going active there were several rays above the viewer but not powerful enough to develop into a half Corona.

This particular photograph was an experiment using a 50mm f1.8 lens and using very short exposures of 2-5 secs at 3200ISO as there was substantially more movement in this far more compact area of activity however depth of field effect is significant as seen in the out of focus trees whereas in similar views using the 24mm lens it is hardly noticeable.

Luxor Nile Balloons flight soaring Western desert landing hills Egypt after passing the several famous temples situated on the West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor. Apart from the main sites visited, in this general area are several Tombs of the Nobles which are usually privately organised visits but very well worth the time if you have a few days to spare in Luxor. The balloon flight illustrated here was in 1994 and there were only two although in later years these increased greatly in numbers. This trip took off from the front of Hatshepsut just after dawn, a cold and interesting crossing of the Nile in the dark and long before the modern road bridge and eventually landed in the desert where the Hilton Hotel put on a beautiful breakfast buffet. I understand in recent times the breakfast has come to a boxed meal probably eaten on the bus journey back to the hotel or cruiseboat.

Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed; my experience is that this phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings.

Peacocks Sun Bathing qax2868jhp
Butterfly peacocks sun basking dorsal reflectance concrete slab ground Deeside Scottish summer photograph taken as they fly from the buddleia’s for short periods to these spots directly in the sun here they will boost their body temperatures both from the sun and also the heat stored in this case a concrete slabon the ground. Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring.

Butterfly peacocks sun basking dorsal reflectance wall house gable Deeside Scotland summer photograph taken as they fly from the buddleia’s for short periods to these spots directly in the sun here they will boost their body temperatures both from the sun and also the heat stored in the stone or concrete. Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile.

Crathes Castle Snowscene 171619jhp
Crathes Castle lawn topiary Scottish winter snow sundial carved face Deeside Aberdeenshire which offers a wonderful vista of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant.

The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Entry into the walled garden is at the west side and the main path into the gardens is through the white borders and onto the path down the June Borders to the bottom of the walled garden where there is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border, the summer jewel resplendent with many colourful plants, with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Topiary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden.

This photo was taken in the days of transparency film before digital was even a serious contender for recording these properties for the publishing market. Little has changed since this photo was taken except the distant rhododendrons which used to border the path coming down to the castle. Also it seems with climate change the days of deep snow are far less at the castle and Aberdeenshire generally.

Woman’s Land Army Memorial Clochan village Buckie snow sea winter Moray Firth Fochabers Crown Estate is situated just to the east of the village of Clochan, near Buckie, off the B9016 road from near Keith to Buckie on the North east Coast of Morayshire. The Memorial was the first and is still the only one dedicated to the Women’s Land Army which was formed in 1917 and continued on with even greater importance during WW2. This interesting and eye catching sculpture is the work of the Artist Peter Naylor and unveiled in 2012 by HRH Prince of Wales. This was the first snowfall on November 2017 and possibly showing some signs of weathering with its russet rust colour. From the site on the Fochabers Crown Estate it is possible to see the sea and across the Moray Firth to the distance mountains and hills of Easter Ross, Cromarty and the Black Isle.

Scotland winter snow covered ash trees sunset evening cold Deeside Aberdeenshire looking towards Ord Fundlie Hill Fare Craigmyle Glassel near Torphins in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland about 25 miles west of Aberdeen.
