Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

Comet Hyakutake March 1996 tail colours long Plough Scottish Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland taken on the evening of the 25th March 1996 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo was taken at 23.50hrsUT between Kincardine O’Neil and Torphins on Deeside with part of The Plough Constellation visible a spring marker for the northern sky. I started photographing the Comet on the 24th and finished 17th April when I was able to include an Aurora display. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 50mm f1.8 lens wide open at around 10 seconds.

It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. On the top of the Dendara roof is this small Chapel of the Union with the Disk in the SW angle of the temple with 12 Hathor headed columns and although no roof might have had removeable wooden one allowing for sunlight to revive statues placed in its precinct.

This photo is of a block of limestone possibly showing repeated sharpening of a sword, knife or bayonet by passing armies such as the mamluks during the Ottoman Empire in the 1800's. Another suggestion is faulty stone showing aggressive erosion.

This photo is of paving blocks on the limestone foundation platform on outside of the rear wall of the main temple adjacent to the sacred lake and small temple of Isis. The blocks were strengthened by the use of dovetail cemented joints.

Abydos Osireion Sety Cenotaph Hall monumental granite columns water flooded to the rear of this Temple north of Luxor in Egypt, a huge Centotaph supposedly to Seti 1 which is now partially submerged owing to the higher modern water table. There is slight distortion of the nearest block because of the wide angle lens - the blocks are absolutely perpendicular.

Aswan Promenade River Nile Cruiseboat berths rubbish collection motorboat Egyptians pass along the berthed cruiseboats collecting plastic bags from this area ideal for trips on the river to hotels, Elephantine Island and Museum, Kitchener Botanical Gardens and trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. Along the promenade are restaurants, berths of cruiseboats, ferry landing areas and to the south the Municipal Gardens, the Coptic Cathedral and the old and new Cataract Hotels, the former of course made famous in the film Death on the Nile.

Egypt Aswan Nubian House Living Room Wall Decoration Ethnic Photograph in a Nubian House often visited on trips in feluccas on the River Nile to the Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear.

Modern Egypt Aswan Nubian Village Lifestyle Ethnic Photo Knick-Knack in a Nubian House often visited on trips in feluccas on the River Nile to the Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear.

Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Coronation Stele exhibit of King Aspalta from Gebel Barkal and in a modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons.

Karanis Kom Aushim Temple Foundations Materials Construction Stones Egyptian Ruined city on the north eastern edge of the area known as Fayoum and dates from Ptolemaic times through to 500AD. Two Roman dated temples survive in reasonable state and the southern one whose foundation construction detail is shown in this photo is dedicated to the crocodile Gods of Pnepheros and Petesuchos. Many finds have been made especially of life in a residential area with houses scattered throughout the site and there is also a fine Roman bathhouse. A small museum now closed has ben replaced with an open air area with a selection of artefacts adjacent to the main walk to the temples.

Karnak Temple Ninth Pylon crane restoration rebuilding front block hieroglyphics located on the transverse axis south from the main central area in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is of the Ninth Pylon with its southern face showing the slow progress of restoration after the infill from many Atenist temples has been removed, much of which lies around the is area of Karnak waiting for an eventual new home. Beyond the base of the crane is the Eighth Pylon originally built by Hatshepsut while the Ninth and Tenth were both attributed to Horemheb.

Karnak Temple Luxor Khonsu Carved wall relief erosion damage sharpening swords located to the SW corner of this huge sprawling site on the East Bank of the River Nile near the modern City of Luxor and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is an interior of the Temple of Khonsu and the temple is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing. Built mainly by Ramesses 111 and 1V but later additions by various kings including the Propylon Gate built by Ptolemy 111 from which an avenue of sphinxes leads to the Precinct of Mut, unfortunately closed to the public. The photographs shows possible erosion of an exterior wall but the deep grooves may also be caused by soldiers sharpening their swords or knives.

Ramose Tomb Funeral Procession Top Left-hand Corner Frieze Fading Colourful of columned hall and is one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze since then when this was taken with a Bronica 645. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible.

Egypt Egyptian Alexandria city railway station Misr Masr oldest stylish modern Mediterranean coast city is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. This photo is of the Railway Station “mahatit masr”, originating from the late 1850’s when the first Egyptian railway line was made to Cairo by Robert Stephenson. The original building has been refurbished after this photo was taken, part of a quick stop from the taxi as I drove around the City on a day trip. A few isolated ancient sites can be visited with some Greco-Roman ruins and archaeology. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours.

Tanis Ancient Egyptian tomb building construction roof mortar joints limestone at Royal Necropolis and Tomb of Osorkon at Tanis once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.

Tell Basta Bastet temple Zagazig confusion blocks ancient Egyptian eastern corner is a large complex near a town north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well.

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Alvah Deveron Reflections SO2023JHP
The Bridge of Alvah spanning the River Deveron with a single arch some 60 feet above the water was built in 1772 part of a private transport initiative by the landowners of the nearby Duff House in Banff. It is no longer used as a bridge but is a very attractive visitor feature and a peaceful two mile walk from Duff House in Banff, an beautiful Georgian baroque mansion open for viewing its restored interior and along with its childrenâ€™s play area, golf course and extensive woodland walks.

Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. Dunkeld town street Scottish NTS Saltire Award Restored houses painted sunny one of the attractive aspects of this town situated on the banks of the River Tay which separates Dunkeld Town per se and Birnam on the far bank. Dunkeld was badly damaged during the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689 was later rebuilt in the 18th Century in a much ‘planned’ style of which this Saltire Award winning restoration by the National Trust for Scotland illustrates in this street near the Cathedral. The location has a chequered and sometime violent history certainly recorded back to Pictish times around 820AD and long association with Christianity since its fledging beginnings in Scotland. Any location by a river lying in the lee of surrounding hills probably attracted habitation even in prehistoric times. It is very busy attractive town for visitors, extremely so during summer weekends, and lies conveniently close to the A9 route between Perth and northwards via Pitlochry into the Highlands.
