Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora au02736jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish display Cassiopeia rays winter February 2002 Aberdeenshire taken on the morning of the 6th February, 2002 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo was taken at 00.40hrsUT showing strong patches with ray activity and the constellation Cassiopeia clearly visible top lefthand area, with activity stopping soon after this photo, the display having started with a low grade arc around midnight. The film numbering of 2001 was that the previous Aurora display covered was in November 2001 with this February display being the first recorded in 2002. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FG20, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open with many exposures manually around 20 seconds because of the lower light levels. Sphinx Giza Vista EG02001jhp Giza Egyptian panorama approach Sphinx Khafre Chephren Pyramid entrance Temple offers the first real look at this giant carved limestone lion statue with human head is somewhat of an enigma, but most likely carved out of an outcrop as an inspirational homage to the Pharaoh Khafre some 2500BC whose pyramid is directly behind it, although some attribute it to the previous Khufu who built the first and Greatest Pyramid. This huge prone lion figure with a human face faces the east to the rising sun and the modern day Cairo and is a very popular destination for the thousands that visit the Giza plateau and here viewed from the most accessible point on the entrance to Giza and the approach to his Valley Temple. Attributed to Seti it had later involvement by Ramasses 1 and 11 and with recent restoration is a delightful extra addition should you have free time while in Luxor and described in the early days as Goorneh Temple. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Fettercairn Fountain xvv2001jhp Fettercairn Mearns Aberdeenshire Scotland fountain Gothic public hall summer rural village situated on the flat rolling fertile farmlands of the Mearns and passed through most often by travellers leaving the main north trunk road to Aberdeen and cutting northwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Deeside. A barony from 1604 and busy market village although the Mercat Cross partly dating from 1670 and currently standing in the village square is probably a relic of past times from the nearby county town of Kincardine. A popular hotel the Ramsay Arms and a working Distillery with a visitor’s centre offer attractions to visitor and I personally remember photographing a Queen Victoria and Prince Albert lookalike starting the Victorian Trail promotion for the then Kincardine and Deeside District Council. This memorial fountain 1869 and baronial public hall date to 1890. Grounds are normally open all year round. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. Elgin Lossie Tree WTN2001JHP Elgin Cathedral River Lossie Spring Daffodils Morayshire Scotland Old Tree was founded in 1224 although a substantial ruin now cared for by Historic Scotland remains one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Scotland aand viewed here from the spring flora on the banks of the River Lossie. The transepts with their buttressed west towers and parts of the tall choir and nave date from the fire of 1270 but subsequent destruction especially by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390 and later further destruction and neglect after the Reformation means we will never see this building in its true majesty. River Dee Sunset 813032jhp River Dee Banchory Platties sunset dramatic powerful red winter Scottish Deeside town Aberdeenshire some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen. This viewpoint is by the Platties, which used to be beneath the railway line near the station but is now below a small park adjacent to the cemetery. On the western horizon is the Hill of Scolty with its distinctive memorial tower.
