Karnak Painted Wall EG074962jhp Karnak Egypt festival hall Thutmose Atef Crown painted interior Amun wall reliefs near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photograph is of detail of the still visible coloured decoration of the Festival Hall of Thutmose 111. The hall was constructed next to one of the oldest areas of Karnak Temple. This is a complex mix of columned hall, chapels, magazines which are not represented in these photos and included an area described as Akhmenu by the ULCA Karnak Archive but not mentioned a such in any other guide books. This area covers the famous botanical garden suite with plants found on his military campaigns into Palestine, a suite for the underworld God Sokar and beyond the remains of a stand of beautiful papyrus columns described as the Colonnade of Tuthmosis 111. Kalabsha Temple EG961578jhp Kalabsha Temple Pylon wall carvings Trajan Isis Horus Mandulis Egyptian Gods headdresses by approach water High Dam south side is visited either privately from Aswan or part of a Lake Nasser cruise. In both cases the approach is by motorboat being located on an island which is impressive with the pylon facing the landing berth and a large flight of steps. On the left is a small Roman kiosk called Qertassi dedicated to the Goddess Hathor and at the rear of the main temple is a small temple from Ramasses 11 period carved out of a rock face although again relocated from near the original site of Kalabsha, some 40 km upstream on the banks of the original River Nile. All these three sites would have been flooded following the creation of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960’s. Amadah Temple Coloured Relief EG051591JHP Amada Ancient Egyptian Temple Interior Painted Wall Pharaoh Horus Hathor on the shores of Lake Nasser weighing 900tons was rescued from the flooding of the River Nile to create Lake Nasser by French engineers who towed it in one piece 2.5km from Kurusku. The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr. Ptolemaic Temple Gods EG051850JHP Deir al-Madinah Workers Temple Interior Relief Osiris Seated Atef Crown Baboon is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Merneptah Temple Exhibit EG053331JHP Temple Merneptah Egypt Luxor Exterior Block Carving Horus Wing Cartouche remains of mortuary site for a Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Luxor Tuthmosis 111 EG9620917JHP Museum Luxor Tuthmosis Pharaoh Painted Face Atef Crown Exhibit Photo was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. This was taken in 2001 on my October trip to Egypt and the work in view has probably since been superseded by many other changes to the site. Seti 1 Temple EG053381JHP Temple Sety Luxor Egyptian Wall Scene Barque Triple Atef Fans Interior Photo on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in an area called al-Tarif turning off eastwards instead of taking the Valley of the Kings road. Attributed to Seti it had involvement by Ramasses 1 and 11 and with recent restoration is a delightful extra addition should you have free time while in Luxor and described in the early days as Goorneh Temple. Valley Kings EG0213055jhp Egypt Luxor Valley Tomb Mentuherkhepshef Osiris Atef Crown painting colours was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well.
