Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Mammisi EG21213jhp Dendara temple Qena Nile Egypt mammisi birth house screen carving beautiful and considered some of the best and most delicate of workmanship of this period and here adorning the Roman mammisi of birth house attributed to Nectanebo 1. It shows the birth of the young God Harsomtus, child of Hathor and Horus of Edfu. This temple is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. Being relocated onto the Island of Agilkia on the River Nile near Aswan, to save it being flooded after the completion of the High Dam, it is perhaps one of the loveliest and most complete classic Egyptian temples to visit with a peaceful spirituality lacking in many of the land based sites. Inside the Peristyle court built by Ramses and behind the pylon nearest to the Nile, ie West side is a Triple Shrine built by Thutmosis 11 to the Gods Mut, Amun and Khonsu and this photograph is of the one to Amun in the centre with thutmosis running towards a seated Amun. The cartouches on this granite lintel face are those of Ramses, Usermaatre his throne name and his birth name, Ra-messes. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
Edfu Temple EG961829jh Edfu Temple Pylon Ancient Egyptian Mammisi Horus Ptolemaic impressive scale complete building viewed from the south and the remains of the mammisi or birth house is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Valley Kings EG0213065jhp Egyptian Valley Kings Tuthmosis Tomb sarcophagus cartouche granite red in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor which was robbed in antiquity and later restored by Horemheb through his official Maya. In the Tomb-Chamber is a red granite sarcophagus with still very brilliant colourful decoration as illustrated in the photo of the Goddess Nephthys. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases.
