Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora 7Mar94 ab94631jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland Deeside westwards tree winter display green nitrogen gas rays arc Aberdeenshire taken on the 7th March, 1994 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from west to north with Cassiopeia lying to the right top. This was the best of seven nights in a row of displays during one of the most active phases of the 90’s Solar Cycle. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RDP pushed processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. What was unusual about this display was the very distinct folding of the arc giving a distinct curtain effect from the many moving rays, the green colours being from low altitude oxygen ionisation around 20.00hrs GMT. This photo was used as the cover image for The Aurora, a book published by me in 1997, now sadly out of print but still avaiable on the second hand market. Aswan Nubian Coffin Texts EG052940JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Coffin Texts inside sarcophagus of Heketa found at rock cut tomb at Kubbet el Hawa and dating to 12th Dynasty, an exhibit inside modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Karnak Carved Wall EG074950jhp Karnak Temple Egyptian Sanctuary Wall Tuthmose Maat Palace Carving obelisk near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photo is situated near the sixth pylon on the outer wall of the inner sanctum around various chapels and shrines attributed to Amenhotep, Hatshepsut and Thutmose 111 leading to the central court area but this outer wall has important offering scnes and texts relating to Tuthmose's military campaigns into Syria and Palestine. Captured on this wall is Tuthmose offering gists to Amun such as two obelisks which had their pyramidions coverd in electrum but were eventually removed. This wall is described as the Palace of Ma'at on the UCLA Karnak website but not mentioned as such in either the Blue Book, Murnane or the touregypt sites. Just visible is the top of the obleisk of Hatshepsut. Luxor Menna Tomb EG006729jhp Egypt Luxor Tomb Mena herding Isis Horus mother unusual Anubis cattle Reliefs is one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. This depiction of the Goddess which I believe is Isis is very unusual with Horus on her head and I have not been able to find it elsewhere shown in my reference books or on the Internet. The Menna Tomb-Chapel is cruciform in design located in the Upper Enclosure [Tomb 69] was a Scribe of the Royal Fields during the reign of Thutmosis 1V around 1400BC. This was one of the first Tombs of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I was taken immediately by the colourful painted reliefs, difficult to photograph as protected by Perspex sheeting and only lit by reflected light done by the custodians. The area around the Tombs has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Visits to these tombs tend to be privately organised rather than being part of a package tour but it is easily organised with a taxi from the East Bank hotels, payment for selected tombs is made at the ticket office beforehand near the Colossi of Memnon with the area being very close to the ticket office. Photography certainly the last time I was in Egypt in 2007 had been banned in all the tombs so these photos although not very good technically are useful as a record of the nature of the tombs and especially their paintings. These images have not been sharpened during post production but will benefit from some USM sharpening prior to use. Hand held as no tripods were allowed and using slide film, Fuji 400asa, did not give great leeway to get decent photos, oh for my Nikon DSLR with 6400ISO. The hand reflected lighting used in some tombs causes a hot spot and nothing by way of a balanced light but it is daylight balanced. However being direct sunlight reflected off tin foil would probably being doing more damage to the paintings than a suitable wide angle flash with UV filter. Given that most of the paints used in these tombs is mineral based then actually either method would do no measurable damage. The Perspex sheeting, however inconvenient, is to stop the physical touching of the paintings accidentally or otherwise, by inquisitive hands or swinging backpacks, and is absolutely vital protection to preserve these invaluable unique irreplaceable paintings. Some of the obvious damage to the paintings is not all modern, as his eyes have been gouged out possibly by an enemy in ancient times. Khenu Mastaba Lintel EG02AA88jhp Saqqara Ancient Egyptian mastaba Khenu lintel Unas cartouche hieroglyphs is located by the causeway and near Pyramid of Unas on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and associated with what was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC. There are several other mastabas near the causeway and behind this small one is a large one dedicated to the Queen’s of Unas Khenut and Nebet. Khenu was the son of Nefer, the Inspector of artisans and singers. I could find little information about Khenu and in several reference books/guide books his mastaba is not mentioned. I understand he had two sons called Ihy and Simoenas, one of which appears in the carvings and his mastaba has an excellent example of a false door. There are several cartouches for the King Unas indicating that Khenu and his father served during this period. Saqqara Tomb Entrance EG051147jhp Saqqara buried tomb door lintel carved entrance hieroglyphs ancient Egyptian is alongside the restored walkway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefer-mery but I can find no reference to it in any books or the Internet but I have had it confirmed that this is probably correct based on the hieroglyphics on the tomb entrance. Saqqara Tomb of Nefermerry 6885EG07JHP Tomb Nefermerry Rock Cut Bedrock Near Causeway Unas Saqqara Egypt and the mastaba tomb at the gate. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser is visible from here and this is just another example of many such artefacts to see on this huge sprawling necropolis to the south of Cairo. The causeway has been substantially restored and has several fascinating carved reliefs of ancient Egyptian fish from the Nile and other animals that existed at the time. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefermerry but I have been unable to find any support for this in guide or reference books and the only Google result is my own site - scary. This was the only opportunity I had of using a tripod, special ticket available in 2001 and I had a roll of tungsten artificial light balanced slide film which allowed long exposures and a decent depth of field. The custodians could not have been more helpful and even cleared areas for me to photograph free of visitors but oh for my D700 DSLR. South Leylodge Stones jkl8119jhp South Leylodge Recumbent Standing Stone Stones Circle Kintore Aberdeenshire prehistoric ruined monument in a field [NJ766132] to the North of the dead end slip road signed Lauchintilly off the B977 Dunecht to Kintore Road. Only the flankers and recumbent appear to be left although there are several single standing stones in nearby fields, possibly monoliths from the original RSC but now useful scratching posts for cattle. Also called the South Ley Lodge RSC per Aubrey Burl’s book ref No: 98 P353 for his details regarding the site. Ian Shepherd in Exploring Scotland’s Heritage: Grampian suggests on page 145 that it might be an example of a RSC that was only that-the flankers and the recumbent and the rest of the circle was never completed. The point was also made that these stones were the first built as the largest and most important although this idea is somewhat contradicted in later studies made at Tomnaverie where these stones are thought to have been added as the final stage of closing out the monument. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

This ruined cottage on the Dinnet estate is what little is left of a South Milton Cottage which was uniquely adorned with arty cement Grecian pillars with spiralling vine and leaves the workmanship of a previous eccentric tenant Sandy Robb and which I featured in my book Grampian published by Alan Sutton Publishing in their series Photographer's Britain in 1993.
