One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Apart from being in excellent condition generally, it offers much to see including some beautiful and detailed reliefs, the best coloured are in the second court and especially its scale. Not usually included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. Medinet Habu Court EG053448JHP Medinet Habu Temple Second Court Colorful Ceiling Roof Lintels Winged Solar Disc located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor and a complex of temples is now dominated by the mortuary temple of Ramasses 111. Apart from being in excellent condition generally, the second court in this photograph offers some breathtaking coloured reliefs ironically preserved under the white wash applied during the Christian era and the temple was used as a church. Not included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. Auchindoun Castle vs2389jhp Auchindoun Castle ruin inside room vaulted celing stonework wall restoration Dufftown Morayshire Scotland autumn walk fort with excellent views over Glen and the River Fiddich is located on a possible earlier Iron Age earthwork, built in the mid-1400's as a traditional L-shaped tower house was the centre of many clan feuds and much violence, burnt, restored and abandoned by 1725 now remains an eye catching Historic Scotland property on the Cabrach to Dufftown road, NJ 349 375. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile.
