The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. It is thought at Maidum pyramid was the first smooth sided success evolving the Step Pyramid design from Saqqara. Now held to be started by Huni, last King of the 3rd Dynasty and completed by his son Sneferu so dating from around 2600BC. Latest theories suggest it collapsed possibly before it was completed evidenced by human remains found under the rubble. This view is looking up the causeway now covered in sand. You can also enter the interior of the pyramid down a long descending corridor of 57m into the natural rock under the pyramid where a short shaft allows access into the burial chamber with its impressive limestone lined corbelled roof. Near by is Mastaba No 17 into which you also access, torch advised, in which is a sarcophagus larger than the one in the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid at Giza. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Cruiseboats EG052095jhp Egypt Egyptian River Nile Esna lock cruiseboats congested cramped many photo taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation which meant many boats were berthed six deep side by side while they waited, although an additional lock was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south.
