Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Cloudy Display aucf12835jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish green red rays North Plough Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the morning of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This photo was taken at 02.25.29hrsUT for 20secs, showing green and red oxygen rays looking Northwards past The Plough, Big Dipper or Ursa Major stars dead centre of the frame. The cf128 digital sequence, starting at 01.39.28 of the continuing activity continued well into the morning of the 30th October when clouds cleared again, perseverance pays, allowing a third major Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 02.28.39 which in the course of displays I have seen was unusual to continue as long as this. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 20.15hrs UT on the evening of the 29th towards the west visible through gaps in the extensive cloud cover and further slide film preceded this digital sequence from 00.56 to 01.04 hrs UT on scanned slides AB036series. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. Aurora Corona Display aucf12605jhp Aurora Northern Lights arc streaming active green rays vivid Plough colours north Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland photos taken on the evening of the 29th October, 2003 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the west. This photo was taken at 22.21.19hrsUT for 26secs showing mainly green oxygen rays from a very active arc with streaming towards the north marked by The Plough dead centre. The cf126, the first digital set taken, was 13 frames over 13mins, illustrating how busy you can be when a full display is ongoing, photographing from east to west and directly overhead. The display continued throughout the evening into the morning of the 30th October. Aswan Nubian Museum Skeleton EG052935JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum grave and skeleton dating to prehistory around 35-3000BC and found at Kubanieh, the 2nd Cataract on the River nIle at Aswan. Semi Nomadic tribe buring dead in oval/rectangular pits of a stone structure and including burial goods just as peronal ornaments made of ivory, faience, bone; shells and coloured stones. An exhibit in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Luxor Temple Kadesh Relief EG074794jhp Luxor Temple Egyptian Kadesh battle scene dead bodies fighting carving relief located on the east bank of the River Nile at Luxor, Egypt is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues that greet the visitor at the entrance to the first pylon. Howver the Court of Amenhotep is considered to one of the marvels of the Temple because of its scale, preservation and style and played a major part in the annual Opet Festival or Feast visited by Amun-Re of Karnak. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. Tuna el-Gebel Well Wheels 6299EG07JHP Ancient Egypt Necropolis Tuna el-Gebel City Dead Water Wheel Roman Well with various chapels, temples and catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried and unexcavated under the desert sands. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel as illustrated in this photo obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. The so-called Persian Shaft was for officials of the Pharaoh, possibly Ahmose 11 c530BC, 26th Dynasty, from the First Persian period, some 2000 years after the Step Pyramid was built. Entered by a wrought iron spiral staircase down a vertical shaft of some 20-25mm depth, three tombs are entered by small horizontal shafts. One tomb that of Psamtik, a royal chief physician still has an enormous carved anthropoid sarcophagus which is empty-the lower half shaped to receive a coffin, the lid, a monolith weighing many tons is perched above it on stone built columns-the custodian suggested I climb on it to photograph the ceilings of beautifully carved hieroglyphic text from the Book of the Dead. For the purist the flash had a UV filter to minimise any unlikely damaging effect on any coloured paintings [Sanders: technical bulletin 16 1995-NPG]. Debate about stone sarcophagus made of, as larger than any of existing shafts-from memory did not feel like granite. The carving skills though were brilliant and the arched tombs covered with text awesome. In the tomb of Pediese, son of Psamtik has coloured ceilings with stars and some painted hieroglyphic text. Access I understand is now limited and is mostly closed. Tomb Ramasses IV EG017111JHP Ancient Egyptian Tomb Ramses Corridor Wall Book Dead Hieroglyphs Afterlife Spell in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor, the ancient Egyptian capital city of Thebes and is a spectacular example of true majesty with scale, colour and elaborate craftsmanship carved out of solid rock. This was the only opportunity I had of using a tripod, special ticket available in 2001 and I had a roll of tungsten artificial light balanced slide film which allowed long exposures and a decent depth of field. The custodians could not have been more helpful and even cleared areas for me to photograph free of visitors but oh for my D700 DSLR. The point was also made that these stones were the first built as the largest and most important although this idea is somewhat contradicted in later studies made at Tomnaverie where these stones are thought to have been added as the final stage of closing out the monument. Only the flankers and recumbent appear to be left although there are several single standing stones in nearby fields, possibly monoliths from the original RSC but now useful scratching posts for cattle. Also called the South Ley Lodge RSC per Aubrey Burl’s book ref No: 98 P353 for his details regarding the site. Ian Shepherd in Exploring Scotland’s Heritage: Grampian suggests on page 145 that it might be an example of a RSC that was only that-the flankers and the recumbent and the rest of the circle was never completed. The point was also made that these stones were the first built as the largest and most important although this idea is somewhat contradicted in later studies made at Tomnaverie where these stones are thought to have been added as the final stage of closing out the monument. The site near Inverness overlooking the Moray Firth has a new National Trust for Scotland visitors centre, large carpark and all facilities to cater for the many thousands who visit this important place of Scottish history every year. Best perhaps seen on a moody stormy cloud covered day to get a feeling of the sense of brooding sadness that this crucial battle had on the Highlands and its relations with the rest of Scotland and England as this was by no means just a defeat by the ‘English’.
