Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

This photo was taken at 00.35hrsUT showing a waning display behind treetop aligned North and was taken at the end of the second evening’s activity after I stopped using slide film around 23.40hrs UT. This photo was taken with a Fuji Finepix S2 digital camera, the first time I used a digital camera for Aurora photography and a major departure from the years of using 35mm slide film. It was set at an ISO of 1600 to match the same sensitivity used for slide film, push developing 400asa Fuji to 1600asa with exposures set around the 20 second mark and lens aperture of f2.8 and the quality results i.e. noise factor was better than a corresponding grain pattern with pushed slide film. This particular photo was exposed for 11 secs with a 19mm focal length. The Botanical Gardens are a pleasant relaxing visit with walks though tree covered paths, splashes of colourful flowers, wild birds and the occasional cat by places to sit and the usual rest house at the main disembarking area when the visit is completed. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

The harbour has a long history of supporting trade across the North Sea with my own forebears working in the wood shipping trade in the 1800’s. A WW2 airfield of note with contemporary museum, beautiful beach, strong academic history, golf course and many other attractions on offer. The basin at Montrose, a tidal inland lake is rich with bird life especially as a roosting area for geese in the winter months. This view is from the railway station on the main east coast line from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and further south to London.
