Egyptian Western Desert Scenery Sand Barren Egypt Qasr el-Siba near a small late 12th century Egyptian worker's temple, unfinished and uninscribed at Qasr al-Saghah near the Gebel el-Qatrani workerâ€™s town servicing the basalt mines to the west of Lake Qarun and accessible only by 4x4 on specialist tours of Egypt. It is constructed of dark brown calciferous sandstone with seven cult shrines facing a common offering table room with the probable front of the temple never finished. This photo is taken near the temple and shows the bleak and desolate desert landscape that surrounds its location.

Egyptian desert walk sand el-Derr temple Lake Nasser Egypt barren desolate the usual backdrop to most of the sites along the shores of Lake Nasser which have been relocated to save them from flooding when the High Dam was constructed in Aswan in the 60’s. This Temple based on the design at Abu Simbel was dedicated to Re-Harakhte, Ramesses 11, Amun-Re and Ptah. Interior paintings are of excellent colour and general preservation. It is short walk from Amadah, the Temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte and slightly further along id the rock cut Tome of Penniut, deputy of Wawat under Ramesses V1. These three sites are usually visited on one visit from the cruiseboat and do involve some walking on desert sand often in extreme heat as well illustared by this view taken after leaving el-Derr and walking to Pennuit.

Western Desert Panorama Photo Amada Shore Lake Nasser Egypt Desolate is the backdrop to this temple weighing 900tons was rescued from the flooding of the River Nile to create Lake Nasser by French engineers who towed it in one piece 2.5km from Kurusku and located by the Western Desert here viewed from the rear of the building The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr.

This is one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt is this desolate desert valley beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation. It is possible to climb over the hills above the Valley, pass above the huge amphitheatre of Deir el-Bahri above Hatshepsut’s spectacular Mortuary Temple and come down into Deir el-Medina, the workers village using the same paths as they must have done over 3000 years ago.

It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors.

Cabrach moor Rhynie Dufftown Aberdeenshire Scotland heather burning grouse spring located in one of the bleakest landscapes especially during a nasty winter day in western Aberdeenshire. This burning of the heather is an annual activity across the Scottish moors and hills allowing short young regenerated heather for easier access for the young grouse. Old heather gets very long, deep and thick and it is impossible for the grouse to eat and get around. On the Cabrach a few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle.
