Karnak Tenth Pylon EG075008jhp Karnak Temple Luxor Tenth Pylon Horemheb enclosure walls gate Statues Mut located on the south western enclosure wall the tenth pylon and gate built by Horemheb leads to the Precinct of Mut which is not open to the public. The Karnak complex is locaqtedd near the Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view of the pylon is from within the central enclosure obscured by this stand opf palm trees but one of two standing, headless statues, probably of Horemheb, is visible on the left. the state of the pylon is in very poor repair, many of the blocks are infill reused from other older buildings and once these are identified and removed, reconstruction will start on this pylon and gate. Ramasseum Pylon EG075187jhp Ramasseum Pylon Inner face disrepair First Egypt Luxor Thebes Gate blocked, situated at this West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor is Ramses 11 mortuary temple glowing in the late afternoon sunlight and in these photos the remains of the enormous First Pylon, now badly ruined and with the gate blocked up to maintain some structural stability. These are taken from inside the first court looking at its north face with some standard Ramasses propaganda carvings of Battle of Kadesh scenes and to the SE side of the court are the remains of the colonnaded Palace where the Pharaoh would have stayed for the important Festivals and ceremonies he was bound to attend. The location has had a history going back for over 800 years, there was a medieval Palace for the Bishop’s of Aberdeen, which was located to the south of the present house in the photograph. SEPP have carried out excavations of the site finding considerable evidence of the early palace. The current house dates from around 1566 after it was acquired by the Leslies of Balquhain although from a small tower originally it has expanded to the present façade in 1818. The carved panel above the main entrance is attributed to Count Patrick Leslie around 1690. Although it is accessible to view it is in a dangerous state of disrepair and is fenced off from public access. Originally opened in 1900 by Dr Lawson of Banchory as one of the earliest commercial sanatorium’s and with a design based on a German model, with a central granite tower, but mainly wooden construction with all rooms facing south for the sun while at the rear were the corridors and service rooms. It treated TB patients, including w. Somerset Maugham, based upon the pine forest air and plenty of sunshine idea. It closed in 1928, was later a luxury hotel, commandeered by the Army during WW2, in 1948 the Red Cross used it for treatment of ex-servicemen and women with TB, had a short-lived revival during the 60’s Typhoid outbreak in Aberdeen and in 1955 became a convalescent home under the new NHS until it closed in 1998 when a hospital facility in modern purpose buildings was constructed. It has a sad history of family feuds between Gordon of Knock, the builder of the present tower, who dropped down dead on hearing the news that his family was killed in one day at the hands of the ‘Black’ Forbes of Strath Girnock. He in turn was later killed by Gordon of Abergeldie who inherited the castle but let it fell into disrepair. Huntly Castle Side TO173073JHP Huntly Castle Winter Snow Photograph Buildings Fallen Disrepair Stonework located near the Scottish Aberdeenshire River Deveron, the present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the river near its joining the Bogie at the town of Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.
