Lake Qarum al-Fayyum eg947034jhp Egypt el-Fayoum Lake Qarun Moeris peaceful quiet lakeshore restaurant was a peaceful coffee stop during hectic visit to The Fayyum [Crocodilopolis Nome] province of Egypt south of Cairo which included visits to Meydum and Hawara pyramids, the waterwheels of Madinat al-Fayyum Town, Lake Qarun and then returning to Cairo via Karanis. Many years later I returned to the Lake and stayed at the historic Auberge Helnan Hotel on its shores before a journey across the desert to Soknopaiou Nesos [Dimyah-al-Siba] and Qasr al-Saghah Temple. The Lake has a long history from Neolithic times but major development started under Amenemhat 1 in the 12th Dynasty with water management and drainage schemes. Very productive area for various crops, wildfowl and fish with increase development during the Ptolemaic and Roman times as it is still to modern days. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. Abu Ghurab Sun Temple EG02AA41jhp Egyptian Abu Ghurab Temple Niuserre Solar Obelisk base eastern aspect isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south.
