The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit.

Khenu Mastaba Carving EG02AA82jhp
Saqqara Egyptian mastaba Khenu deceased son offering kilt dress hieroglyphs is located by the causeway and near Pyramid of Unas on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and associated with what was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC. There are several other mastabas near the causeway and behind this small one is a large one dedicated to the Queen’s of Unas Khenut and Nebet. Khenu was the son of Nefer, the Inspector of artisans and singers. I could find little information about Khenu and in several reference books/guide books his mastaba is not mentioned. I understand he had two sons called Ihy and Simoenas, one of which appears in the carvings and his mastaba has an excellent example of a false door. There are several cartouches for the King Unas indicating that Khenu and his father served during this period.

Egypt Egyptian Tomb KV19 Montu-hir-Khopshef Sekhmet Sakhmat lioness painting colour was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs.
