Dendara Sacred Lake Steps eg98331
Dendara Temple Sacred Lake steps inside ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic palm trees photo is located north of Luxor and survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of the sacred lake steps which take one into a deep walled catchment area now dry but filled with palm trees. It would have been used for rituals conducted during the Feast of Osiris.

This photo includes the Great Pit, a 60 metre deep excavated hole to access ground water, possibly dug during Graeco-Roman times to save the burdensome carrying of water from sources nearer the Nile. There is the remain of a small building, mudbrick and mud lined, attributed to Roman origin and huge piles of broken shards from drinking pots, urns and other earthenware pottery vessels used for the possible carrying and retention of water, some designs are plain while others have patterns. However there is a suggestion that water was never found either in the Ramasseid period when first attempts are thought to have started and even in the later Ptolemaic times. It did however serve in latter years as a huge tip from which large quantities of ostraka where recovered giving detailed insights to the daily life and skills of the workmen in the nearby village. From the Great Pit are open views eastwards past the Ramasseum, across the fertile agricultural area of the West Bank to the distant pylons of Karnak Temple.

Deir el-Medina Luxor Ancient Egypt West bank Ramasseum Great pit view is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket.

The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheelhouse as illustrated in this photo obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen.

Alexandria Nilometer eg9613815jhp
Egypt Alexandria Nile ancient Nilometer door well archaeology silted dry Rhakote hill modern Mediterranean coastal city no longer reminiscent of tae ancient city from Pharaohic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one is located on Rhakote Hill one of the earliest sites in the City with some Roman ruins and archaeology. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours.

Egypt > River Nile Cruise & Sites (3 files)

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Egypt Egyptian River Nile Esna cruiseboat still life washing deck life ropes photo taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation, although an additional one was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south.

This summer double rainbow occurred on the late afternoon of 29th August, 2023 at 17.57BST from a rain shower passing over. Camera used was a Nikon D700 FX body with 16-35mm zoom lens at 16mm focal length, ISO 200 at f11 aperture with 1/320sec exposure. The shapes, size and colours make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a reflection of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible as well as the photographer. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often couple with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible and it also appears in the images are short lines as it falls catching the sunlight although in these photos not a problem.

Clickimin Broch Iron Age Stone Built Lerwick Scottish Island Shetland lies about 1m SW of the town and is situated on what is now a peninsular of land into a small loch although originally the location would have been an island reached by a causeway. This dry stone walled building possibly from the Iron Age sited on an earlier Bronze Age structure may have been a fort or fortified farmhouse with walled ring fortifications surrounding a tower and is an example of a style of construction unique to Scotland.
