Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora aucf14102jhp
Aurora Borealis Scottish dispersed green arc Plough winter north Deeside Aberdeenshire photographed near Kincardine O'Neil on Royal Deeside west of Aberdeen in the evening of 22nd November 2003, 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This followed a major storm on the 20th which with hindsight it was the biggest I have since on Deeside to date, 2018. This set of digital photos were taken from 21.32hrsUT for 16secs and these cf141 digital photos were taken at 1600ISO. The 8 photos in this cf141 sequence were taken in the space of about 20mins and followed the cf140 sequence taken in the early hours of the 21st. This photo showing early stages of a display with bright arc patches prior to rays forming slightly west of due North. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 second mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa.

Aurora Corona Forming aucf13119jhp
Aurora Borealis Scottish strong Corona zenith shape green red rays Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the evening of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This digital photo was taken at 23.25.32hrsUT for 13secs, showing green and red oxygen rays forming the classic corona zenith or crown above the cottage roof looking southwards the colour chnage indicating the strength of the display increasing. This was a short exposure 13 as against 20 secs and very faint CCd structure lines are visible and indication of an under exposure. This was the last of the digital photos taken. The cf131 digital sequence, starting at 22.58.22, shows the continuing activity following on from the very active night of the 29th/30th with another Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 23.25.32 which was frustrated by complete cloud cover and rain. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 21.50hrsUT on the evening of the 30th when the extensive cloud cover cleared. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 21.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. Aurora Borealis Scottish Corona zenith green rays west Pleiades birch Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the morning of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This photo was taken at 02.24.39hrsUT for 24secs, showing green zenith arms and strong background red oxygen forming another coronal zenith or crown looking south westwards with Pleiades visible in top of the tree. What is not recorded in this still image is the degree of movement around the centre with the swirling arms of the rays as the display continues to form. The cf128 digital sequence, starting at 01.39.28 of the continuing activity continued well into the morning of the 30th October when clouds cleared again, perseverance pays, allowing a third major Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 02.28.39 which in the course of displays I have seen was unusual to continue as long as this. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 20.15hrs UT on the evening of the 29th towards the west visible through gaps in the extensive cloud cover and further slide film preceded this digital sequence from 00.56 to 01.04 hrs UT on scanned slides AB036series. This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear. No model release form was obtrained or needed for using this photo in a public place.

Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Model Boat EG012624JHP
Egyptian Museum Exhibit wooden model boats photo interior burial goods illustrating one of many grave goods in the form of model boats in this case to assist the deceased in the Afterlife here in the first floor of the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

This photo is of the exterior walls at the east corner which is accessed either through the Bubastite Portal or walking back from Khonsu Temple or perhaps the Sacred Lake. It is now an integral part of the largest religious complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in Egypt but when first built would have been isolated as the first pylon of Nectanebo was constructed later. Ramesses 111 Temple was a barque shrine dedicated to Amun in his two most recognised forms, Amun-Re and Amun-re-Kamutef, King of the Gods and Karnak and who is before the harim. On the exterior walls on its western face it has a large scale scene of many boats as they might have been seen during the annual river procession along the Nile from Luxor Temple to Karnak. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins.

Alexandria Mosque eg9613614jhp
Egypt Egyptian Alexandria city Mosque Square Abu al Abbas al Mursi park trees flora modern Mediterranean coast city is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. This photo is of the Abu al Abbas el Mursi Mosque in the Anfoushi district and the current form is from a refurbishment in 1945 by King Farouq and became the centre of Mosque Square, although built 1775 over the tomb a Spanish scholar and saint of the same name. Its current style is very much in the Arabian style popular when the Saint came to Egypt in the 13th Century. A few isolated ancient sites can be visited with some Pharaonic, Greco-Roman ruins and archaeology. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours.

This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Persian Shaft eg951159jhp
Egypt Saqqara Persian shaft tomb Padiaset colourful painted hieroglyphics texts stars pyramid funerary spells one of many tombs around the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid. The so-called Persian Shaft was for officials of the Pharaoh, possibly Ahmose 11 c530BC, 26th Dynasty, from the First Persian period, some 2000 years after the Step Pyramid was built. Entered by a wrought iron spiral staircase down a vertical shaft of some 20-25mm depth, three tombs are entered by small horizontal shafts. One tomb that of Psamtik, a royal chief physician still has an enormous carved anthropoid sarcophagus which is empty-the lower half shaped to receive a coffin, the lid, a monolith weighing many tons is perched above it on stone built columns-the custodian suggested I climb on it to photograph the ceilings of beautifully carved hieroglyphic text from the Book of the Dead. For the purist the flash had a UV filter to minimise any unlikely damaging effect on any coloured paintings [Sanders: technical bulletin 16 1995-NPG]. Debate about stone sarcophagus made of, as larger than any of existing shafts-from memory did not feel like granite. The carving skills though were brilliant and the arched tombs covered with text awesome. In the tomb of Pediese, son of Psamtik has coloured ceilings with stars and some painted hieroglyphic text. Access I understand is now limited and is mostly closed.

Photographs of the Valley of the Kings from tomb interiors as well as exterior views of the valley including the tombs of Ramses 1V, KV 43 and 19.
Valley Kings EG0213049jhp
Egypt Luxor Tomb KV19 Prince Mentuherkhepshef Khonsu Solar Disk Crescent painting colour was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well.

Woman’s Land Army Memorial Clochan village Buckie snow sea winter Moray Firth Fochabers Crown Estate is situated just to the east of the village of Clochan, near Buckie, off the B9016 road from near Keith to Buckie on the North east Coast of Morayshire. This interesting and eye catching sculpture is the work of the Artist Peter Naylor and unveiled in 2012 by HRH Prince of Wales. This was the first snowfall on November 2017 and possibly showing some signs of weathering with its russet rust colour. From the site on the Fochabers Crown Estate it is possible to see the sea and across the Moray Firth to the distance mountains and hills of Easter Ross, Cromarty and the Black Isle.

Donside River Don Chapel Towie Aberdeenshire Scotland summer rural farmland forming an attractive part of Upper Donside between the Muir of Fowlis and Towie looking Northwards across the farmland by the River Don. This is taken from the back road running to the south of the River from the Hillockhead/Chapel of Towie heading east to Milltown of Towie village itself and eventually crossing the River Don at Glenkindie. This is one of my favourite views of the river although the broom has seen better days.
