Tut Soldier Guard EG012616JHP Egyptian Cairo Museum standing statue Ka Tut Tutankhamun interior photo from his Luxor Tomb and now in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Walk to Dakka EG051753JHP Egyptian Guard Desert Walk Temple Dakka Lake Nasser Sebua Tourists is located on the shores of Lake Nasser after relocation from its previous location 2km away to avoid flooding after the creation of the High Dam in Aswan. The temple was built by Ramesses 11 of which much evidence stands as statues, sphinxes and engaged Osiride Statues in the inner courtyards. The temple was later used for Christian worship and has the curious site of Ramesses adoring St Peter in the sanctuary. This site is usually a part of a Lake Nasser cruise and begins a part of the cruise which is completed with a longish hot desert walk to the nearby sites of Dakka and Maharraka before returning to the cruiseboat. Luxor Temple EG006116jhp Luxor Temple ancient Egypt granite statues Ramesses columns evening light golden glow guarding the north wall of the large peristyle court of Ramesses 11 and facing the River Nile. It is located on the east bank of the River Nile at Luxor, Egypt is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues that greet the visitor at the entrance to the first pylon. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. This photo is taken on the interior wall showing how the pylon first looked including large flagged poles, the two obelisks and the seated statues of Ramasses including standing figures of the Pharaoh as well. One of the obelisks and some of standing figures have all been given away, mainly to France. This photo is taken from the outside of the colonnade looking back to the rear of the pylon and peristyle court. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Corgarff Castle Guard VS2718JHP Corgarff Castle Entrance Ram Field Aberdeenshire Historic Scotland fortified fort just off the A939 Ballater/Tomintoul road with a commanding position over this strategically important route to the north. The core tower was built in 1537 and the most striking star-shaped curtain wall dates from 1748 when occupied by the Hanoverian troops tracking down Jacobite rebels. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.
