Egypt > Egyptian Museum Cairo (1 file)

Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Pyramidion Amenemhat EG11812JHP
Egyptian Museum Cairo hall basalt polished pyramidion Pharaoh Amenemhat 111 from the top of his mudbrick pyramid at Hawara dating from around 1800 DC. In the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

Lake Qarum al-Fayyum eg947034jhp
Egypt el-Fayoum Lake Qarun Moeris peaceful quiet lakeshore restaurant was a peaceful coffee stop during hectic visit to The Fayyum [Crocodilopolis Nome] province of Egypt south of Cairo which included visits to Meydum and Hawara pyramids, the waterwheels of Madinat al-Fayyum Town, Lake Qarun and then returning to Cairo via Karanis. Many years later I returned to the Lake and stayed at the historic Auberge Helnan Hotel on its shores before a journey across the desert to Soknopaiou Nesos [Dimyah-al-Siba] and Qasr al-Saghah Temple. The Lake has a long history from Neolithic times but major development started under Amenemhat 1 in the 12th Dynasty with water management and drainage schemes. Very productive area for various crops, wildfowl and fish with increase development during the Ptolemaic and Roman times as it is still to modern days.

Ancient Egyptian Hawara Pyramid Fayyum Amenemhet royal tomb shafts oblong deep, at a site well to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. The tomb shafts adjacent to the entrance road our well constructed with smooth well finished walls and could have been for royal women rather as in Lisht and I understood from my guide that many items found were displayed in the small musuem at Karanis which has been closed since I visited it 1994.

Egypt Pyramids Amenemhet 111 Dahshur Black mudbrick desert rubble Red view ruined structural problems was started early in the 46 year reign of the King but is thought to have had structural defects because of its location close to Lake Dashur as well as too many internal rooms and passageways which could not support its weight. The Pharaoh, Middle Kingdom c1800BC was not buried in the pyramid [in Hawara] but two of his wives were and their remains were found by Dieter Arnold in 1976-83. The beautiful pyramidion in black gray granite, possibly never set in place, is in the Cairo Museum.
