Egypt > Aswan in general (15 files)

Images in this gallery relate to Aswan in southern Egypt covering the city, the River Nile and related sites except for more important places such as Philae, The Nubian Museum and Seheil Island Rock carvings.
Aswan Quarry EG949313ajhp
Aswan granite quarry levels layers hole marks Ptolemaic Roman period Egypt seen in this popular place, the quarry of the unfinished obelisk, visited usually after the package tour excursion to Philae Island as it is located in the Northern Quarries on the outskirts of Aswan itself. There are other quarries and two in the South Quarry area have an unfinished colossus while another has an unfinished sarcophagus. These remains of regularly cut holes are probably dating from Ptolemaic and Roman times when copper and iron tools were used, hundreds of year after the unfinished obelisk was abandoned. It is most interesting because of its sheer scale which, if completed, would have been one of the largest ever cut out but it gives an idea of the techniques used to extract these monsters. Diorite, a very hard mineral stone was used as hammer balls to pound the granite and on either side of this obelisk can be seen deep gullies with bowled floors showing the depth penetrated. This obelisk is thought to have been abandoned when a fracture occurred near the top. Around the area are the remains of other stone quarrying as illustrated in this photo showing how holes were cut in the rock in a series of runs that allowed fractures to occur possibly using a variant on the ‘feather and plug’ method removing the blocks of pink granite to be removed but from a much later period.

Certainly one of the most beautiful is that of Queen Nefertari [66], restored by the Getty Institute and is not always open. Entry is by limited special permission and substantial entrance fee. I did have the chance to see it for a very limited time and of course no photography was allowed but it was an awesome experience, almost akin to be being in a Disney cartoon rich in colour. Luxor West Bank Modern Qurna Sennefer Guesthouse Hotel Egyptian Vista along with Old Qurna houses is interspersed with the Tombs of the Nobles is undergoing a major modernisation programme with the houses being removed, occupants relocated and the entrances to the various tombs made more accessible. Obviously a programme without some pain and opposition especially from locals who have lived in the area and over the tombs for generations but part of the necessary management and control of these irreplaceable ancient sites and the artefacts contained therein. The Hotel I understand from the owner is destined to stay - a pleasant stop for refreshment after the heat of walking to several tombs.

Alexandria Roman Amphitheatre eg961418jhp
Egypt Alexandria Kom el-Dikkah Roman ruins amphitheatre mosaic flooring patterns columns seats Mediterranean coastal city is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one of the smaller municipal parks called Kom El-Dik or Dekka with some interesting and reasonably preserved Roman ruins and ongoing archaeology probably dating from 2nd C AD. The amphitheatre could accommodate 800 seated on 13 rows of grey and white marble seats and once had a domed roof, now long gone except for a few columns that once supported it. Nearby are the remains of a Roman bathhouse and nearby piscina which when I was there were still being excavated. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours.

Egypt Alexandria el-Dekka Roman ruins amphitheatre marble seats rows carved style Mediterranean coastal city is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains.

It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors.

Scotland > Flora and Fauna (6 files)

Gallery of Scottish photographs of plants, flowers, such as bluebells, harebells, Dames Rocket, broom, gorse, fox gloves, poppies; trees such as gean, silver birch, pines, Scots Pines, larch, and a few wild animals such as birds, hare, pheasants, roe deer, red squirrels, insects, butterflies such as peacocls, red admirals, tortoiseshell, although I am not a wildlife photographer as such.

Butterfly peacocks sun basking dorsal reflectance concrete slab ground Deeside Scottish summer photograph taken as they fly from the buddleia’s for short periods to these spots directly in the sun here they will boost their body temperatures both from the sun and also the heat stored in this case a concrete slabon the ground. Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring.

Blackbird Sunningl zxc3212jhp
Blackbird sunning spread wings dyke sunny Deeside Scotland summer photograph taken with a telephoto lens through the kitchen window as this female blackbird undertakes a practice attributed to them in summer days in strong sunlight. Despite research the general theory is that of maintaining its feathers possibly stimulating the Vitamin D produced in its preen-oil gland or maybe regulating its temperature on hot days. I have seen sparrows also doing a similar thing but on the ground, especially if it is sandy and wondered if it might be to do with cleaning away mites, as part of the sand bath activity-hen pheasants also seem to like this and often create their own sand bowl for regular use.

Although this is the summer of the long summer heat and sunshine the North East of Scotland was lucky to get some rain, unlike England, but the river is low and there are signs of river algae and the riverside reeds seem to have grown more. The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road.
