These remains of regularly cut holes are probably dating from Ptolemaic and Roman times when copper and iron tools were used, hundreds of year after the unfinished obelisk was abandoned. Obviously a programme without some pain and opposition especially from locals who have lived in the area and over the tombs for generations but part of the necessary management and control of these irreplaceable ancient sites and the artefacts contained therein. The Hotel I understand from the owner is destined to stay - a pleasant stop for refreshment after the heat of walking to several tombs. Bani Hassan Rock Tombs 6145EG07JHP Bani Hassan Rocky Bluff Thirty Nine Rock Cut Tombs Cliff High Up Steps Climb along the face of a bluff above the River Nile some 20km south of Minya makes this a special visiting place for its decorations along the themes of wrestling, battle scenes and the collection of taxes by the nomarchs of the Oryx Nome give some beautiful tomb paintings to view - unfortunately photography was absolutely refused when I visited. The climb to the tomb-chapels is a steep 80 metre climb and although the steps are modern it is not for the faint hearted during the heat of the Egyptian summer. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one of the smaller municipal parks called Kom El-Dik or Dekka with some interesting and reasonably preserved Roman ruins and ongoing archaeology. The amphitheatre could accommodate 800 seated on 13 rows of grey and white marble seats and once had a domed roof, now long gone except for a few columns that once supported it. Nearby are the remains of a Roman bathhouse and nearby piscina which when I was there were still being excavated. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors. Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring. Blackbird Sunningl zxc3212jhp Blackbird sunning spread wings dyke sunny Deeside Scotland summer photograph taken with a telephoto lens through the kitchen window as this female blackbird undertakes a practice attributed to them in summer days in strong sunlight. Despite research the general theory is that of maintaining its feathers possibly stimulating the Vitamin D produced in its preen-oil gland or maybe regulating its temperature on hot days. I have seen sparrows also doing a similar thing but on the ground, especially if it is sandy and wondered if it might be to do with cleaning away mites, as part of the sand bath activity-hen pheasants also seem to like this and often create their own sand bowl for regular use. The June Border is the summer jewel of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Any of my photographs are for scenic/tourist use only and cannot be used for product endorsement without the explicit permission of the NTS. Please contact their Edinburgh Head Office at Hermiston Quay, 5Cutlins Road, Edinburgh, EH11 4DF. This is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 15 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. On a technical note this photo was taken in the years prior to digital photography, when all high end publishing quality photographs were taken using transparency film, in this case Fuji Astia 100asa 120 stock and were scanned in by the publishing house. Submissions of work were made with mounted transparencies being sent to the customer; damage loss could be high. Photographing the June Border with all its flowers required stillness as a polarising filter was used dropping the ASA to 50 or lower which required the camera mounted on a tripod for a cable release exposure often as low as Ľ second. Early morning was best before the heat caused the breeze to start but too early, prior to 9am meant the sun was not on the full face of the Castle. By mid morning visitors had started to arrive, especially the coach tours and the June Border was no longer free of people. Although this is the summer of the long summer heat and sunshine the North East of Scotland was lucky to get some rain, unlike England, but the river is low and there are signs of river algae and the riverside reeds seem to have grown more. The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road.
