Aurora over Scotland (2 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora and Cloud aucf11103jhp
Aurora Borealis Scotland autumn October clouds red ray northwards Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland two photos taken on the evening of the 15th October, 2003 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo was taken at 23.29.10hrsUT for 18secs showing strong red ray activity from a very low grade arc and the constellation Ursa Major, The Plough or Big Dipper is just hidden behind the increasing cloud cover. I took 4 frames over 30 mins, so cloud cover stopped me photographing more of the display using my Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my earliest digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and for this display, sandwiched between 27th July and 28th October, I took no slide film. At 1600 ISO the noise factor was not a problem and the general look of the images were better than the corresponding slide film with 400asa stock pushed two stops to give an equivalent sensitivity level of 1600asa. There was a full moon that night sitting off to the east of this north facing display.

Egypt > Infra Red Photographs (2 files)

This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Egyptian Delta Town Street Shop Egyptians Work Motorcycles Repairs People in the area east of the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built for its Bubastis Temple Site which still remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages these sorts of town images are part of a private trip into the northern areas of Egypt part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well.

Tanis Hidden Queen EG077212JHP
Tanis Amun Temple Ramses Statue Queen Nefertari Standing Hidden Egypt Delta site in Northern Egypt once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.

Tell Basta Broken Column EG077105JHP
Tell Basta Bastet temple Butastis column broken ancient Egypt Delta site is a large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well.

Todhead Catterline sea waves crashing rocks Forley Craig coast northwards Mearns Aberdeenshire Scotland located south of Catterline is the former Todhead Lighthouse on the North east coast of Aberdeenshire south of Stonehaven standing pudding stone cliffs. The cliffs stick out on a small headland but with sheer drops into the North Sea but offering spectacular views of the sea pounding on the rocks below and views northwards along the coast from Braidon Bay and to the distant Forley Craig beyond Catterline, famous for its seafood restaurant. The lighthouse was built in 1897 by D.A. Stevenson and is still a stylish if sad reminder of the heyday of Victorian Maritime heritage. Its short ‘dumpy’ tower hides a shaft dug into the cliffs underneath which allowed the original clockwork mechanism to operate as described in Jane Geddes’s Deeside and Mearns Architectural Guide.

The building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.

Old Kinneff Kirk zxc5213jhp
Kinneff Old Church autumn sunshine tombstones Mearns Aberdeenshire sea Scotland history Crown Jewels has its famous claim to Scottish History as the hiding place for eight years of the Scottish Regalia spirited away by Mrs Grainger, the Minister wife, from Dunnottar Castle. They were saved thus from the clutches of Cromwell’s troops in 1652 during the siege of the castle when his troops were attacking the Scottish Royalist troops loyal to Charles 11. The current church was rebuilt in 1738 on the site of the original one consecrated in 1242. The North aisle and staircase were added in 1876. The bell dates from 1679 and came from Rotterdam. 17th century wall tablets in the church commemorate Sir George Ogilvy of Barras who was Governor of Dunnottar Castle during the siege and who organised the smuggling of the regalia out of the castle. On a personal note, I had the privilege of photographing a re-enactment of what is thought to be how it was done for the current coloured version of the Dunnottar Castle Guidebook.
