Egypt > Edfu Temple (1 file)

Photos in this gallery are of Edfu Temple, one of the best preserved in Egypt, and usually the first first visit after leaving Luxor ona Nile Cruise.
Edfu Temple EG203627jhp
Edfu Temple town center street calache horse carriage ride tourist transport to Edfu Temple located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. Edfu is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. In 200 the normal tourist entrance was from the north and you walked alongside the side of the temple wall and then round to enter the temple proper by the main pylon gate on the south face. However these days the tourist approach is from a new centre situated to the south and walking up to the temple is as was intended after its construction so that the immense pylon dominates as you arrive at the temple. Some cruise companies now use coaches as there have been complaints about the care of the horses that has upset visitors and I know on one occasion the driver of the carriage tried to make it race others to get to the temple first-our group warned him no baksheesh and he returned to a walking pace.

Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut Fan Holder EG11723JHP
Egypt Museum Cairo Tut Exhibit ostrich feather fan holder photo made of wood with gold leaf from the tomb of Tutankhamun. In the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

Egypt > Infra Red Photographs (1 file)

This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx
Egyptian Giza InfR EG020418jhp
Khafre Pyramid Egyptian horse rider scale Giza infra red film photo of the second largest of the Gizah site monuments and constructed between 2558-2532BC during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre [Greek name Chephren], one of Khufu’s sons and is responsible during a reign of around 25 years for the magnificent Funerary complex which is held to include The Sphinx. Although his Mortuary Temple is almost nothing but a foundation, his Valley Temple is a fantastic example of the skills of the early Egyptian craftsman with huge accurately cut pillars of granite which was the house after his death for numerous statues including the famous diorite one now in the Cairo Museum. This view is of the west face with Cairo bottom right taken near the main road through the Giza complex showing the mainly uncovered structure although remains of the outer casing of Tura Limestone can still be seen near the top. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins.

The most famous and awesome part of The Great Temple of Amun is the hypostyle hall with it huge columns, the central ones reaching 23m high. Originally erected by Seti 1 and was completed by his son Ramses 11 and although today greatly lacking in perfection is still overwhelming in its scale. This photo is taken from the outside of the hall on the southern side of the Temple where most of the inscriptions are related to Ramesses 11 and his various military campaigns in Palestine, charging fortresses, cities, binding captives and the hall is viewed from his gate on this side. This particular photograph was taken in 1998 as part of a Stars and Signs cruise and we were able to access the temple at sunrise before it opened to the main package tour traffic. This allowed photos to be taken in beautiful golden early morning light which was particularly useful in highlighting some of the rich wall reliefs.

These photos are taken in dying evening light after a sandstorm so rather flat and golden subdued light but still gives sufficient shadow outline on the sunken carvings.

Howver the Court of Amenhotep is considered to one of the marvels of the Temple because of its scale, preservation and style and played a major part in the annual Opet Festival or Feast visited by Amun-Re of Karnak. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Migvie Cross Slab jkl9308jhp
Migvie Stone Cross-slab Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands in the kirkyard of Migvie Church and is easily accessible for the casual visitor. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on gneiss stone, 2 metres high, similar to that at Kinord but held to be of inferior quality. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. There are also iconic symbols carved into the angles of the cross, namely horseshoe, V-rod, double disc, Z-rod and a pair of shears as well as a horse and rider.

Glen Dye Spring bnm7010jhp
Glen Dye Charr Burn gorse yellow spring Scottish Aberdeenshire summer May taken on the Cairn O’Mount stretch of road just before the steep hill down to the Spital Brig, looking across to the Charr Burn and a very typical part of the grouse and deer moorland and forestry Glen Dye estate located between Banchory on Royal Deeside and Fettercairn in Mearns. The road crosses over the moorlands peaking at the Cairn O’Mount with a viewpoint for views southwards to the coast near Montrose and the whole of the flat fertile Howe of Mearns plain south as far as Dundee. Looking over the very narrow single lane Spital Brig is an old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. The small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.
