Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut Soldier Guard EG012616JHP Egyptian Cairo Museum standing statue Ka Tut Tutankhamun interior photo from his Luxor Tomb and now in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Karnak Montu Temple EG0214012jhp Temple Ptah Museum Storage Area Karnak Egypt statue priest Amenhotep 111 cartouche which is located inside the north enclosure wall of the Karnak Complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. This storage shed, a mini museum with two standing statues is near the delightful small temple pf Ptah on the walk along the enclosure wall to Montu Temple. Avery seldom frequented area so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are broken granite states of Ptah and Sekhmet. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. Karnak Chapel Thutmosis 1V EG074908jhp Egyptian Karnak Thutmose alabaster Chapel Open Air Museum detail hieroglyphs was one of the original exhibits in the Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the Nile at Luxor. Ruling around 1400BC he is particularly known for the famous Dream Stele between the paws of the Sphinx. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including another of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel of whom little is recorded, who ruled around 1550-24BC and although his mummy was found in the 1881 royal mummy cache but this beautiful small chapel is one delightful reminder of his 25 year reign. There is the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Karnak Thutmosis Court EG074890jhp Colored bas relief restored column hands ankh Festival Court Thutmose 1V Open Air Museum Karnak Temple in Luxor here in the process of lovingly being restored and a substantial addition to the many beautiful and charming small chapels that can be found in this hidden peaceful corner of the huge Karnak site. Thutmosis 1V is the Pharaoh associated with the famous Dream Stele which lies between the paws of The Sphinx at Giza. Luxor Pharaoh Tuthmosis 111 EG9620916JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Library Photos Egyptian King Pharaoh Thuthmosis Statue was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit of green graywacke was found in the Cachette at Karnak north of Pylon V11 in 1904, ranking as one of the masterpieces of ancient Egyptian craftsmanship and is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. Khenu Mastaba Carving EG02AA82jhp Saqqara Egyptian mastaba Khenu deceased son offering kilt dress hieroglyphs is located by the causeway and near Pyramid of Unas on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and associated with what was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC. There are several other mastabas near the causeway and behind this small one is a large one dedicated to the Queen’s of Unas Khenut and Nebet. Khenu was the son of Nefer, the Inspector of artisans and singers. I could find little information about Khenu and in several reference books/guide books his mastaba is not mentioned. I understand he had two sons called Ihy and Simoenas, one of which appears in the carvings and his mastaba has an excellent example of a false door. There are several cartouches for the King Unas indicating that Khenu and his father served during this period. Saqqara Museum 6811EG07JHP Saqqara Museum Carved Egyptian Figure Ipiemsafipi Khennu Scribe White Apron exhibit in this new museum by the modern ticket office at entrance to the Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo. This figure of a young man, Ipiemsafipi, son of the scribe and chancellor Khennu from the Middle kingdom was found on the site famous for the Step Pyramid built for King Djoser around 2500BC under the architectural control of Imhotep who later was deified. Craigievar Beating Retreat 71931JHP Craigievar Castle Pipeband Bagpipes Kilts Drum-major Beating Retreat Scottish Aberdeenshire event on National Trust for Scotland property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round. This was an occasional event by a local pipeband beating retreat at the close of the season. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.
