Egypt > Aswan in general (2 files)

Images in this gallery relate to Aswan in southern Egypt covering the city, the River Nile and related sites except for more important places such as Philae, The Nubian Museum and Seheil Island Rock carvings.
Aswan Quarry EG949313ajhp
Aswan granite quarry levels layers hole marks Ptolemaic Roman period Egypt seen in this popular place, the quarry of the unfinished obelisk, visited usually after the package tour excursion to Philae Island as it is located in the Northern Quarries on the outskirts of Aswan itself. There are other quarries and two in the South Quarry area have an unfinished colossus while another has an unfinished sarcophagus. These remains of regularly cut holes are probably dating from Ptolemaic and Roman times when copper and iron tools were used, hundreds of year after the unfinished obelisk was abandoned. It is most interesting because of its sheer scale which, if completed, would have been one of the largest ever cut out but it gives an idea of the techniques used to extract these monsters. Diorite, a very hard mineral stone was used as hammer balls to pound the granite and on either side of this obelisk can be seen deep gullies with bowled floors showing the depth penetrated. This obelisk is thought to have been abandoned when a fracture occurred near the top. Around the area are the remains of other stone quarrying as illustrated in this photo showing how holes were cut in the rock in a series of runs that allowed fractures to occur possibly using a variant on the ‘feather and plug’ method removing the blocks of pink granite to be removed but from a much later period.

Egypt > Infra Red Photographs (5 files)

This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx

There are many important elements to this temple and include an extensive King’s List and the spectacular remains of the Cenotaph to Sety 1, the Osireion.
This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins.

Visits to Abydos are not usually included in standard Nile cruise packages and are usually arranged a private excursions from Luxor usually by road. In addition the trip can be extended to visit the Ptolemaic Dendera Temple near Qena although this temple is often organised as a separate excursion as par of a day Nile cruise from Luxor. If visiting Abydos make extra time for a visit by foot to the nearby small temple of Ramasses 11 which has some of the most wonderfully colourful wall paintings open to daylight so easily photographed.

Hawara Pyramid eg01319jhp
Hawara Faiyum Amenemhet pyramid mudbricks exposed layers closeup thousands Egyptian, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty, Middle Kingdom, by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core which still stands dominant and substantial but the limestone covering of Tura Limestone is now all missing. The entrance on the south side is visible but the high ground water table means it is flooded as are all the lower chamber areas. It is most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains except for a large area of sandy mounds and hollows divided by a canal; new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems it appears unfinished at the time of his death c1797BC.

Meydum Fayyum pyramid desert causeway sand Egyptians scale collapsed rubble ancient early example of the final structure of the Egyptian pyramids that finally dominated the Giza skyline. It is thought at Maidum pyramid was the first smooth sided success evolving the Step Pyramid design from Saqqara. Now held to be started by Huni, last King of the 3rd Dynasty and completed by his son Sneferu so dating from around 2600BC. Latest theories suggest it collapsed possibly before it was completed evidenced by human remains found under the rubble. This view is looking up the causeway now covered in sand. You can also enter the interior of the pyramid down a long descending corridor of 57m into the natural rock under the pyramid where a short shaft allows access into the burial chamber with its impressive limestone lined corbelled roof. Near by is Mastaba No 17 into which you also access, torch advised, in which is a sarcophagus larger than the one in the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid at Giza.

Egypt > Saqqara & Memphis (1 file)

This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Step Pyramid EG051117jhp
Ancient Egyptian limestone construction Step Pyramid bricks Saqqara west face dating from around 2500BC to the south of Cairo is the earliest stone built monument in Egypt and probably in the world and near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and was designed by Imhotep, one of the greatest minds in ancient Egypt and later deified as a God. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light.

Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed and this winter dawn is a wonderful illustration of just that; my experience is that the colourful phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the very low light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings and overall sharp apertures.

Deeside Scotland summer June sunset clouds layers moving dark sun setting hilline Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different.

The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges.
