Edfu Temple EG203824jhp Edfu Temple Egypt ambulatory carvings reliefs Maat three feathers unusual query walls sides is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. This photo was taken inside the ambulatory a walled walkway surrounding the temple and which is covered in many beautiful and detailed carvings in sunk relief and although some have been damaged by later Christian zealots the overall quality of this workmanship is awesome. Edfu is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. Karnak Temple Carving EG074941jhp Ancient Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut Maat Mut Amun Karnak Temple Transverse Hall is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. The figure in the foreground could be Queen Hatshepsut as the cartouche above has ripple of water and bit of the feather that appear in her Named cartouche. She is presenting Goddess Maat to Amun [not in frame] led by the Goddess Mut below. Not a very expert interpretation so do not take as gospel. Karnak Carved Wall EG074950jhp Karnak Temple Egyptian Sanctuary Wall Tuthmose Maat Palace Carving obelisk near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photo is situated near the sixth pylon on the outer wall of the inner sanctum around various chapels and shrines attributed to Amenhotep, Hatshepsut and Thutmose 111 leading to the central court area but this outer wall has important offering scnes and texts relating to Tuthmose's military campaigns into Syria and Palestine. Captured on this wall is Tuthmose offering gists to Amun such as two obelisks which had their pyramidions coverd in electrum but were eventually removed. This wall is described as the Palace of Ma'at on the UCLA Karnak website but not mentioned as such in either the Blue Book, Murnane or the touregypt sites. Just visible is the top of the obleisk of Hatshepsut. Karnak Fallen Obelisk EG074979jhp Egypt Queen Hatshepsut Granite Obelisk Pyramidion Amun Cartouche Maatkare Karnak Temple is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake and this is what is shown in this photograph. The obelisks were of red Aswan granite and the standing one is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Both encased buy a room covering them in done by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower sections remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Luckily this has been largely untouched and most of the carvings including Queen Hatshepsut are pristine as she kneels at the feet of Amun with her cartouche on the left shwoing her throne name Maatkare. Amadah Temple Hieroglyphs EG051583JHP Amadah Temple Interior Photo Wall Carving Hieroglyphs Ankh Maat Cobra located on the shores of Lake Nasser weighing 900tons was rescued from the flooding of the River Nile to create Lake Nasser by French engineers who towed it in one piece 2.5km from Kurusku. The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Ramose Tomb Reliefs EG563JHP Ramose Tomb Relief Ancient Egypt Nobles Relief Pharaoh Shrine Sunlight, one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Luxor Temple is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues at the entrance to the first pylon. Facing the pylon is the long Avenue of Sphinxes attributed to Nectanebo 1 which went completed would have joined up with Karnak Temple and recent reclamation work had established much of this avenue running through the town. Tanis Cartouche Maat EG077222JHP Tanis Amun Temple Carving Cartouche Maat Anubis Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs Delta site in Northern Egypt once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.
