Giza Menkaure Pyramid EG024111jhp Menkaure Mycerinus Pyramid Egyptian tomb limestone blocks entrance camel tourist, the smaller of the Gizah site monuments and built during his reign of 28 years from 2531-2504 and it is about half the size of the Great Pyramid, possibly because of a much more relaxed rule than his predecessors who exacted a high price on the society building their huge monuments. Alongside his pyramid are three smaller ones for his Queens, the larger for his chief queen, Khamerernebty 11. This is the North face of the pyramid with the entrance and the huge gash left by earlier more brutal attempts of accessing the burial chamber. Modern access is through the entrance in the course of unfinished granite blocks showing above the mound of soil. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. It is most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains except for a large area of sandy mounds and hollows divided by a canal; new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems it appears unfinished at the time of his death c1797BC. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. Access to Senusret’s pyramid is through a local village and agricultural land at the edge of the desert escarpment as is common with most of the pyramid sites south of Giza. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. The broken stone partly repaired with iron bands and cement after workmen broke it is supposed to stand in its original position and across from the modern War Memorial; nearby is a Millennium standing stone. The broken stone is claimed to have marked the place nearby where an early Scottish Pictish King Dardanus was killed circa AD75, according to Hector Boece’s History of the Scots 1527, because of his cruelty and universal dislike. This whole legend is beyond determining as fact. Slightly south west downhill of this and in the forest is a Long Cairn possibly dating to c.4000BC. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile. Balvenie Castle bnm9693jhp Balvenie Castle defensive ditch mound fortress walls Dufftown Morayshire Historic Scotland property which requires payment on entry. Started in the Late 13th century during the reign of King James with later additions during the mid 1500’s, it held a commanding position at the meeting of several Glens and a strategic position that kept it in use until abandonment in 1720. A quadrangular curtain wall of great proportion still remains as does some of a deep vertically side surrounding ditch which were all part of its substantial defences. One of the several attractions of this Highland town founded in 1817, centre of the whisky distillery country with seven distilleries surrounding it of which Glenfiddich is the best known, which is busy with visitors from around the world following the Malt Whisky Trail.
