Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Gilded Coffin Face EG11801JHP Egypt Cairo Museum golden gilded sarcophagus face mummy coffin Tut in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Karnak Two Chapels EG074909jhp Egypt Karnak Thutmosis alabaster Chapels two Amenhotep museum sunny blue sky was one of the original exhibits in the Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the Nile at Luxor. Ruling around 1400BC he is particularly known for the famous Dream Stele between the paws of the Sphinx. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including these of Thutmosis 1V in the foreground and beyond that of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel of whom little is recorded, who ruled around 1550-24BC and although his mummy was found in the 1881 royal mummy cache but this beautiful small chapel is one delightful reminder of his 25 year reign. There is also the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

This is the covering for a mummy and in the style of many such Late Period mummified coverings with gold plating or polychrome cartonnage giving it surprising richness. It is difficult to avoid reflections in the glass especially as access to take photographs is restricted, tripods and flash is banned and I understand that since I visited there has been an overall photography ban applied.
