Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Abydos Ramesses 11 Temple Painting 5414EG07JHP Temple Abydos Small Ramses vulture flying neret Nekhbet cartouche colourful painted reliefs at this location a 10 minute walk to the NW of the main Sety 1 Temple at Abydos and although much smaller and completely uncovered, it is worth the walk and effort to see it for there are many high quality colorful painted reliefs which are easily accessible and a joy to behold. Probably covered as late as the Napoleonic exploration means the sun and exposure to the elements has not had long enough to destroy the colours completely something that will eventually happen. A very colourful cartouche of Ramesses 11 is visible near the corner of this wall. Edfu Ptolemy Warrior EG052248JHP Edfu Temple Pylon Ptolemy Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Vulture Neret Atef viewed from the south face with deep carved figure of Ptolemy X11 smiting his enemies and this ancient monument is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Karnak Khonsu Carving EG075023jhp Karnak Temple Khonsu Ramesses Interior detailed sharp carvings hieroglyphs offering Amun located to the SW corner of this huge sprawling site on the East Bank of the River Nile near the modern City of Luxor and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is taken inside the Temple of Khonsu and the temple is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing. Built mainly by Ramesses 111 and 1V but later additions by various kings including the Propylon Gate built by Ptolemy 111 from which an avenue of sphinxes leads to the Precinct of Mut, unfortunately closed to the public. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including such as an Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel, the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent large addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] temple for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Attributed to Seti it had involvement by Ramasses 1 and 11 and with recent restoration is a delightful extra addition should you have free time while in Luxor and described in the early days as Goorneh Temple.
