This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault. This photograph was taken in January 1986 and is scanned off a 645 transparency and was used as a Stirling Gallery postcard which is still being used and has sold over 200,000 cards.
