Its use along with the Hall of Foreign Tribute were perhaps part of the living areas for the royal family of Akhetaten and his Queen Nefertiti although little remains now except the foundations and bases of columns. There is a crannog in Loch Kinord. Generally dating from 2nd century BC through to 3rd Century AD little in the way of artefacts has ever been found. However these are substantial structures and a new one was identified in addition to those originally identified and modern techniques such as drone have allowed a more accurate overview of the area to be made and further modern soil and plant life analysis has added to the overall knowledge of the site and this period of man’s early Deeside history. Nearby is of course the very spectacular Bronze Age hilltop Recumbent Stone Circle at Tomnaverie excavated and partially restored by Reading University over two seasons in 1999 and 2000. Green Granite Quarry qwe7752jhp Summer Hill Fare Green Quarry flooded pink trees overgrown bracken Deeside taken at The Green on the road up to this huge hill area standing north of Banchory and extending from Echt in the east to Torphins in the west and part of Dunecht Estates on Royal Deeside to the west of Aberdeen in Aberdeenshire. The pink granite from this quarry was used to build many of the late Victorian houses on the estate and in the nearby villages including the town of Banchory including our family house on Ramsay Road in 1904. It was built in 1857-9 by engineer John Willet on the Aboyne Extension from Banchory and was later part of the Ballater branch line, the Royal Deeside Line of the Great North Scotland Railway. Known also as the Sundayswells, Torphins and Lumphanan Viaducts it crossed the Beltie Burn at the Tornaveen junction off the A980 and remnants of the railway line embankments can still be seen. National Grid reference is 60690332. This photo was taken 22 June 1988. Structural details are noted in the keywords. An attempt was made to save the viaduct but sufficient funds could not be raised to maintain it and it was eventually demolished in June of 1989. Many of these photos were taken while I covered the story for the local newspaper the Deeside Piper and are taken from 35mm and 645 transparency film of varying quality so the quality is not always of the best. Corse Castle Scotland VN0349JHP Corse Castle Ruin House Z-Plan Tower Roadside View Aberdeenshire Mar is located off B9119 Tarland road-take Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire. Donside Summer bnm3623jhp River Don June trees overgrown blocking view Tilliehashlach Donside Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland looking downstream eastwards by the Paradise Woods at the entrance to Tilliehashlach on summer morning, although noticeably this view is getting very restricted by the maturing tree growth. Bennachie Hill, the site of a vitrified Pictish fort is behind the viewer with its distinct outline clearly viewed from many parts of Aberdeenshire. This road coming from Keig to the west through the Lord’s Throat runs down the south side of Bennachie, passes a Forestry Enterprise carpark at Donview with public walks in the Paradise Woods and eventually joins the Monymusk to Chapel of Garioch road near the road bridge after passing this viewpoint.
