This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film.  Khafre Pyramid Egypt Seshemnefer tomb statue infra red sunburst film B&W photo just off the main road climbing up between the Sphinx to the Great Pyramid of Khufu or Cheops which is the largest of the Gizah site monuments and the first of the really truly huge constructions dating around 2500BC and still now one of the Wonders of the World. Standing 137m high, was 140m originally, was 230m on each size and probably was built using over 2 million blocks of stone averaging 2.5 tons although today it looks smaller than nearby Khafre Pyramid which higher on the Giza plateau. This porticoed tomb of Seshem-Nefer, Overseer of the House of Life and Keep of the King’s Secrets, one of the largest of the private tombs at Giza, has been restored in recent years and is now open to the public although when this photo was taken in 2002 it was closed. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins.

There are many important elements to this temple and include an extensive King’s List and the spectacular remains of the Cenotaph to Sety 1, the Osireion.
This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins.

Visits to Abydos are not usually included in standard Nile cruise packages and are usually arranged a private excursions from Luxor usually by road. In addition the trip can be extended to visit the Ptolemaic Dendera Temple near Qena although this temple is often organised as a separate excursion as par of a day Nile cruise from Luxor. If visiting Abydos make extra time for a visit by foot to the nearby small temple of Ramasses 11 which has some of the most wonderfully colourful wall paintings open to daylight so easily photographed.

 Karnak Temple Sed festival Amenhotep 11 columns fourth court pylons located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the ninth and tenth pylons on the east wall of the fourth court in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is looking over the fourth court from the around the eighth to tenth pylons largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. The Jubilee Temple of Amenhotep possibly for the Sed festival has been recently excavated and partially restored and is thought to have been physically moved, stone by stone, from near the eighth pylon by Horemheb when the ninth pylon was added. Although the original temple is attributed to Amenhotep 11 it was later dammaged by the Atenists and then repaired by Sety 1.

 Karnak Temple Luxor Khonsu Opet Apet Ptolemaic Amun Osiris cult located to the SW corner of this huge sprawling site on the East Bank of the River Nile near the modern City of Luxor and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. The nicely decorated Temple of Opet or Apet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing and is located on the SE corner of the main Khonsu was mainly a Ptolemaic Temple and in practice dedicated to Amun who had by this time assumed much of the characteristics of Osiris. Like Khonsu itself is is well preserved, usually not very busy and a delightful escape from the crowded areas around the main Karnak site.

The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed.

 Ramasseum Temple Osiride figures columns base portico hall hypostyle Egypt Luxor Thebes, situated at this West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor is Ramses 11 mortuary temple glowing in the late afternoon sunlight and in these photos the remains of the Hypostyle Hall on the south east side feature with the rear of the second pylon and the toppled statue of Ramasses 11 visible in the background when looking southwards to the First Pylon. This was taken in 2001 on my October trip to Egypt and the work in view has probably since been superseded by many other changes to the site.

 Medinet Habu Temple Small Amun entrance portico steps Jeser Ast Egypt located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor and a complex of temples is now dominated by the mortuary temple of Ramasses 111. Apart from being in excellent condition generally, it offers much to see including some beautiful and detailed reliefs, the best coloured are in the second court and especially its scale. Not usually included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. This photo was taken during a visit in November 1998 with a Stars and Signs Tour and is of the eastern gate, the usual point of entry for visitors. This photo is of the Ptolemaic gateway which was a latter addition to the Small Temple which lies outwith the main Temple. The gate with its winged disc emblem and still with remains of original paint would have been an entrance through a mudbrick pylon no longer in existence. Visitors usual entrance into the Small Temple of Amun which lies outwith the main mortuary temple building and lies to the right of eastern gate entrance.

 Temple Seti Sethos Sety Frith Photograph Albumen Print Ancient Egyptian site on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in an area called al-Tarif turning off eastwards instead of taking the Valley of the Kings road. Attributed to Seti it had involvement by Ramasses 1 and 11 and with recent restoration is a delightful extra addition should you have free time while in Luxor. Described in the early days as Goorneh Temple and here photographed by English Victorian photographer Francis frith in 1857.

Attributed to Seti it had involvement by Ramasses 1 and 11 and described in the early days as Goorneh Temple. This photo was taken around 1870 by Antonio Beato, a Victorian photographer, for his album entitled The Nile 1872.
