Aurora over Scotland (3 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora-Borealis-wsc6930jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland November green red West display Grampian Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of 25th November, 2023 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen, at 18.33hrsUT and was indicated by the magnetometer readings on AuroraWatch as a Red Storm. This was viewed with a full moon behind so it has a subdued colour balance to it but very accurate of what the human eye would have seen; upright looking Westwards. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 24mm Nikkor Wide angle manual lens at f5.6 aperture, ISO setting of 3200 for 10 seconds. The increased ISO sensitivity of modern DSLR痴 allows for shorter exposures circa 10 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving. Clouds increased and displays during the rest of the evening were not seen. I use the older manual lenses as they are much easier to set at Infinity, modern zoom lenses are harder to focus on infinity especially in very dark conditions. No additional filters are added. Aurora Corona ab00512jhp Aurora Borealis Corona green red wings shape sweeping Scottish British UK Deeside eastwards Aberdeenshire taken at 00.35 hours UT on the 7th April, 2000 over Deeside some 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This event is the most major scale of display visible for as the display starts to develop and increase in power it passes southwards creating a moving zenith overhead giving the impression of looking underneath a huge crown often with multiple colours. The shape at the zenith from which rays drop to all the horizons in a 360 degree sweep can create weird shapes which are changing rapidly around the central vortex. This level of display is rare in the UK because the power levels need to be huge and are caused mainly by a CME, Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun痴 surface with the eruption aimed directly at the Earth. It is unusual for the more common Solar Wind generated displays to reach the UK let along push as far south as the Channel although sometimes they can be combined with a direct CME hit and cause large and colourful events. Karnak Ram Sphinxes EG075072jhp Karnak Temple Egypt Crio-sphinx Ram Tourist posing woman portrait Ramses statue is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. An unknown visitor poses for her partner. Camel Portrait EG051744JHP Egypt Egyptian Camel Face Decoration Lake Nasser Sebua Dakka Photograph is located on the shores of Lake Nasser after relocation from its previous location 2km away to avoid flooding after the creation of the High Dam in Aswan. The temple was built by Ramesses 11 of which much evidence stands as statues, sphinxes and engaged Osiride Statues in the inner courtyards. The temple was later used for Christian worship and has the curious site of Ramesses adoring St Peter in the sanctuary. This site is usually a part of a Lake Nasser cruise and begins a part of the cruise which is completed with a longish hot desert walk or interesting ride on these camels to the nearby sites of Dakka and Maharraka before returning to the cruiseboat. Crathes June Border to2040036jhp Crathes Doocot Gardens portrait June Border flowers colours summer sunshine Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland summer view of the relayed borders in 2004 and probably the best display of flowers I have seen in the June border over the years. The June Border is the summer jewel of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett痴 of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop.
