Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Chapel Union Disk eg9621515jhp Dendara Temple roof chapel union disk Hathor faces ancient Egyptian photograph roof view from this monument located north of Luxor surviving as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. On the top of the Dendara roof is this small Chapel of the Union with the Disk in the SW angle of the temple with 12 Hathor headed columns and although no roof might have had removeable wooden one allowing for sunlight to revive statues placed in its precinct. Karnak Temple SS984636jhp Thutmosis Pillar Karnak carved Granite papyrus sunrise Lower unified Egypt is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This colourful pillar is one of two erected by Thutmosis 111 in front of the barque sanctuary in the Great Temple of Amun painted and carved with the heraldic plants representing the lily or lotus flower of Upper Egypt and the papyrus of Lower. He also who made considerable contributions to the construction of the Karnak complex with pylons, obelisks, one of which still stands, and a Festival Hall. This particular photograph was taken in 1998 as part of a Stars and Signs cruise and we were able to access the temple at sunrise before it opened to the main package tour traffic. This allowed photos to be taken in beautiful golden early morning light which was particularly useful in highlighting some of the rich wall reliefs. Karnak Montu Temple EG0214009jhp Temple Montu precinct propylon Karnak Egypt gate Amenhotep Ptolemy which is located inside the north enclosure wall of the Karnak Complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. Accessed near the delightful small Temple pf Ptah on the North Enclosure of Karnak and as very seldom frequented so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast and it was the only time I have been offered the chance to see this site and was not allowed to explore it. The Ptolemlaic Propylon is visible behind the palm tree on the left and the older main temple of Amenhotep 11 is on the right. This view is taken from the entrance in front of the pylon of the Temple of Khonsu and the temple is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing. Built mainly by Ramesses 111 and 1V but later additions by various kings including the Propylon Gate built by Ptolemy 111 from which an avenue of sphinxes leads to the Precinct of Mut, unfortunately closed to the public. The pylon was later decorated in place by the High Priest Pinedjem, later a King and the columned court inside is attributed to the King Herihor. The Karnak complex is locaqtedd near the Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view of the pylon is from within the central enclosure obscured by this stand opf palm trees but one of two standing, headless statues, probably of Horemheb, is visible on the left. the state of the pylon is in very poor repair, many of the blocks are infill reused from other older buildings and once these are identified and removed, reconstruction will start on this pylon and gate. A temple to the war God which has some interesting remains but would require private arrangements to view - dating from Amenhotep 111 of the 18th Dynasty with later additions and repairs. The temple is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing. Karnak Temple is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. Aberdeen Xmas Gardens up767786jhp Aberdeen Gardens Christmas Xmas lights trees dark winter Union Terrace all located in the centre of the Aberdeen and with the famous Bon Accord floral coat-of arms on the face of the bank in the Gardens beneath the background terraces offers unique public space landscaped on a natural gorge. This is an older photo from 2007 but I think was better for viewing the Xmas lights whereas in recent years an ice rink and now a large shopping precinct has destroyed the quiet ambience of the park. Known affectionately as “ Education, Salvation and Damnation” three classical Aberdeen silver granite buildings facing Rosemount Viaduct off a grand backdrop – the City Library, St Mark’s domed Church and HM Theatre now of course with its very modern addition of box office and restaurant and here photographed from the famous Union Bridge on Union Street.
