Aswan Nubian Female Statue EG052945JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum schist statue of Ankhesneferihre, daughter of Saite King and entitled Divine Wife of Amun dating from 26th Dynasty at Karnak and displayed inside this modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Karnak Temple Sandstorm EG0214013jhp Karnak Egypt Chapel gate sandstorm dramatic light hypostyle palms hazy which is located inside the central enclosure wall of the Karnak complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Pictures from the great Mortuary temple of Ramasses 111 called the Medinet Habu on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor
Medinet Habu SS984116 Medinet Habu Temple Mortuary Ramesses Saite Chapels panorama pylon located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor and a complex of temples is now dominated by the mortuary temple of Ramasses 111. Apart from being in excellent condition generally, it offers much to see including some beautiful and detailed reliefs, the best coloured are in the second court and especially its scale. Not usually included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. This photo was taken during a visit in November 1998 with a Stars and Signs Tour and is of the eastern gate, the usual point of entry for visitors. This photo is of the Ptolemaic gateway which was a latter addition to the Small Temple which lies outwith the main Temple. The gate with its winged disc emblem and still with remains of original paint would have been an entrance through a mudbrick pylon no longer in existence. This photo was taken from the enclosure wall near the modern visitor entrance at the eastern gate. The Mortuary Temple of Ramesses 111 is behind the large intact pylon and to the right is the small block of the Saite Chapel of the Divine Adoratrices. This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Burial Shaft EG02AA63jhp Saqqarah Unas Pyramid ancient Egyptian burial shaft Amun-Tefnakht General on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and which was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC and is a considerable state of disrepair although some of the finer quality Tura limestone casing still remains. The inside is now not accessible but is one of the easiest to enter and entry by Gaston Maspero was financed by Thomas Cook & Co where a highly decorated burial chamber covered in Pyramid Texts was uncovered along with a huge basalt sarcophagus. This burial shaft is similiar to several round this part of the complex but is not the Persion Shaft which is much deeper and is accessed down a spiral staircase.
