Egypt > Egyptian Museum Cairo (1 file)

Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut Jewellery EG11735JHP
Egypt Cairo Museum King Tut Exhibit Gold scarab jewellery necklace in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

Karnak The White Chapel EG074916jhp
Egypt Karnak White Chapel Senusret columns hieroglyphs carvings detailed cartouches was one of the original and stars of the Open Air Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. As the oldest reconstruction at the site, dating from around 1970 -26 BC, testifies to one of the richest periods of craftsmanship in ancient Egypt, achieved perhaps because of the stability of his reign of over 30 years and is considered the peak of craftsmanship in the 12th Dynasty shown in some exquisite examples of jewellery found at Dashur. This area is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including one of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel and another from the reign of Thutmosis 1V, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour.

Egypt Alexandria Nile ancient Nilometer door well archaeology silted dry Rhakote hill modern Mediterranean coastal city no longer reminiscent of tae ancient city from Pharaohic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one is located on Rhakote Hill one of the earliest sites in the City with some Roman ruins and archaeology. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours.

Egypt Alexandria Roman Ptolemaic granite sphinx column Pompey Serapeum Rhakote hill modern Mediterranean coastal city no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaohic times and little of that ancient time remains.

Egypt > Seheil Island Rock Carvings (1 file)

Sehel Island, Seheil Island on the River Nile amongst the cataracts near Aswan has a real Nubian village walked through to reach the large quantity of rock carvings on the boulder strewn island many of which are included in these photographs
Seheil Rock Carvings EG052600JHP
Seheil Island Aswan Egypt Rock Carvings Many Figures Gods Boulders at this site near Aswan amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before.
