Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Folding Arc AB9076334JHP Aurora Borealis Folding Arc rays Crathes Deeside Scotland Northern Lights taken near midnight on the 1st May, 1990 at the Ley near Crathes just to the east of banchory on Royal Deeside some 18 miles west of Aberdeen. After an very busy night of displays this renewed arc became active and started to bend and snake with rays climbing from it and giving the illusion of large floating curtains. The colour was mainly from nitrogen giving the mauve hue and the display continued until dawn light around 3.00am started to drown it out. Fuji slide film pushed processed to 1600asa and taken with a Nikon FM2 body and 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens with an exposure around 15-20 seconds. Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Roman Mammisi eg075610jhp Dendara Temple Birth House Roman Hathor statue platform offering ancient Egyptian located at this home of the Goddess Hathor, north of Luxor surviving as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. The photo is of the Roman birth house or mammisi built by Trajan with some of the finest carvings in Egypt, here with scenes of Hathor suckling her son Ihy and another of him behind her with the King Trajan making offering to her. Karnak Carved Wall EG074977jhp Luxor Karnak Temple Egyptian Carving Central Court wine pouring damaged near the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. The photo is taken around the fourth and fifth pylon and shows possibly a Tuthmosis cartouche but they appear to be damaged, maybe deliberately, but there is hint at the beautiful craftsman ship with the section on the back right showing pouring of the wine nd the clean cut delicate nature of the carvings. Karnak Chapel Amenhotep 1 EG074906jhp Egyptian hieroglyphs Karnak Amenhotep Alabaster Chapel Museum detail cartouche Horus was one of the original exhibits in the Open Air Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the Nile at Luxor. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including this one of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel of whom little is recorded, who ruled around 1550-24BC and although his mummy was found in the 1881 royal mummy cache but this beautiful small chapel is one delightful reminder of his 25 year reign. There is another alabaster chapel from the reign of Thutmosis 1V, the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Kom Ombo EG204331jhp Kom Ombo museum blocks Egyptian hieroglyphs beautiful iconic symbols carvings of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Egyptian Painted Lintel EG051865JHP Deir al-Madinah Winged Lintel Uraeus Temple Painted Colours Blue White Photo Interior is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Photos of the recently opened Temple of Merneptah site on West Bank at Luxor with coloured reliefs, open air museum exhibits and interior carvings and paintings.
Merneptah Painted Relief EG051892JHP Temple Merneptah Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs Duck Sedge Bee Ankh Henen in museum annex for pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Attributed to Seti it had involvement by Ramasses 1 and 11 and with recent restoration is a delightful extra addition should you have free time while in Luxor and described in the early days as Goorneh Temple. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Pictures of pyramids and scenery related to them outwith the main sites of Giza and Saqqara such as Abusir, Dashur, El Lisht, Meydum and Hawara
Abu Sir Pyramids eg9512115jhp Egypt Abu Sir Sahure carved block per nu shrine hieroglyphs snake ankh art near Saqqara lying on the desert plateau south from Giza is a complex of what were originally 14 pyramids of which only four are now discernible. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. Baby Adder Snake 0784UP34jhp Tanar Glen Deeside Scottish reptile summer adder snake young viper basking near Tanar House a Glen which is a popular setting for weddings and photographs by its loch a short walk from the well known Ballroom. Glen Tanar which lies to the south of Aboyne on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire North East Scotland. The Glen is now a very regularly visited place with Braeloine Centre with Ranger and Visitors’ Centre, holiday cottages, fishing and easy access to many easy walks through ancient Scottish Caledonian Pine Forest and is the main route to Mount Keen. I photographed the snake on the driveway entrance to the main house sunning itself on the stone chips.
