Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality

Egypt Cairo Museum Exhibit Tutankhamun back funerary mask hieroglyphs photographed taken under natural lighting in 1994 in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

For the purist the flash had a UV filter to minimise any unlikely damaging effect on any coloured paintings [Sanders: technical bulletin 16 1995-NPG]. Debate about stone sarcophagus made of, as larger than any of existing shafts-from memory did not feel like granite. The carving skills though were brilliant and the arched tombs covered with text awesome. In the tomb of Pediese, son of Psamtik has coloured ceilings with stars and some painted hieroglyphic text. Ancient Egyptian Tomb Ramses 1V [KV2] Valley Kings Luxor Thebes West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor, the ancient Egyptian capital city of Thebes and is a spectacular example of true majesty with scale, colour and elaborate craftsmanship carved out of solid rock. This was the only opportunity I had of using a tripod, special ticket available in 2001 and I had a roll of tungsten artificial light balanced slide film which allowed long exposures and a decent depth of field. The custodians could not have been more helpful and even cleared areas for me to photograph free of visitors but oh for my D700 DSLR.

Butterfly small tortoiseshell colourful rear view blue chevrons buddleia feeding Scotland August summer photograph as they feed and fly eratically between different buddleia bushes and they hardly settle and are moving all the time so awkward to photograph. So far I have counted only a pair of them on my several buddleaias and these are the second brood of the year as the first appear much earlier in the summer. Numbers overall are better this year, 2017, although still down on 20 years ago when 100plus was not unusual. So far this year I have counted over 50 at one time, mainly Peacocks and Red Admirals with a couple of Small Tortoiseshells and one Dark Green Fritillary but some good sunny spells seems to have got them active. One surprise was to find a Golden Ringed Dragonfly hanging from a buddleia early in the morning, no movement of any kind while I photographed it but it had gone 10 mins later when I came out again.
