The journey through the back streets, military zones and industrial sites was fascinating enough but even the taxi driver had to ask twice for directions. It was eventually not that far from a so-called sculpture park that I had ‘discovered’ the previous year on the same search but failed to find the colossus. There are other quarries and two in the Southern Quarry area of which Tlaina has this unfinished colossus, another statue is at Shallal Quarry while another has an unfinished sarcophagus. It is thought that a fracture in the shoulder of this statue of Ramses 11 might be why it was abandoned and further down the hill an unfinished square base has also been found as well as evidence of a ramp or track way that was being prepared for its transportation when completed. The famous unfinished obelisk is the most interesting because of its sheer scale, if completed it would have been one of the largest ever cut out but it gives an idea of the techniques used to extract these monsters. Around the area are the remains of other stone quarrying showing how holes were cut in the rock in a series of runs that allowed fractures to occur and for the blocks of pink granite to be removed. Diorite, a very hard mineral stone was used as hammer balls to pound the granite and on either side of this obelisk can be seen deep gullies or channels with bowled floors showing the depth penetrated. This obelisk is thought to have been abandoned when a fracture occurred at the very far end. Aswan Souk Bazaar donkey cart man driver onions potato sacks to the colourful street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so.

Edfu Temple town center street calache horse carriage ride tourist transport to Edfu Temple located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. Edfu is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. In 200 the normal tourist entrance was from the north and you walked alongside the side of the temple wall and then round to enter the temple proper by the main pylon gate on the south face. However these days the tourist approach is from a new centre situated to the south and walking up to the temple is as was intended after its construction so that the immense pylon dominates as you arrive at the temple. Some cruise companies now use coaches as there have been complaints about the care of the horses that has upset visitors and I know on one occasion the driver of the carriage tried to make it race others to get to the temple first-our group warned him no baksheesh and he returned to a walking pace.

Khufu Cheops Great Pyramid Egypt Giza Boat Barque Museum limestone blocks, the largest of the Gizah site monuments and the first of the really truly huge constructions dating around 2500BC and still now one of the Wonders of the World. Standing 137m high, was 140m originally, was 230m on each size and probably was built using over 2 million blocks of stone averaging 2.5 tons although today it looks smaller than nearby Khafre Pyramid which higher on the Giza plateau.
Photos is taken near the Funerary Temple of Khafre on the southern face of the Great Pyramid, a small figure walks just under the Solar barque or Boat Museum building on the left - the figure if transported to the top of the pyramid would probably not be visible.

This site is usually a part of a Lake Nasser cruise and begins a part of the cruise which is completed with a longish hot desert walk or interesting ride on these camels to the nearby sites of Dakka and Maharraka before returning to the cruiseboat.

Egypt Museum Luxor Photo Tutankhamen Tut Model Sailing Boats Barks was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit is one of a few from the Tomb of King Tutankamun discovered by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings and shows model funerary barks intended to transport his soul from his tomb to Abydos and an important exhibit is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions.

Lisht village Egyptian life camels transporting palm fronds street scene was spotted driving through the village enroute to the two Lisht pyramids of Amenemhet and Senwsoret on the desert escarpment south of a trip from visiting the Dashur necropolis. Definitely need a great taxi driver who can navigate his way to these outlying sites, finding the local custodian and also managing not to get bogged down in the sand once away from the plantations.

This photo is of one of these shafts-apologies for the exposure on the foreground but one of the problems of slide film in the field, however the important part the construction of the shaft is shown clearly.

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors.
