Luxor Karnak Seti Shrine EG074846jhp Karnak Temple First forecourt Egypt Triple Shrine Seti Chapel Barque way station inside on the left when entering through the western pylon on visiting this famous site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is a typical scene in the first court after entering through the main entrance of the first pylon with the remains of the pillared kiosk of Taharqa in a single papyrus column and the large block of alabaster, possible a barque station. Beyond is the second pylon with its decorated front and the beginning of the famous hypostyle hall leading to the distant obelisks and inner sanctuary. Kalabsha Temple EG961578jhp Kalabsha Temple Pylon wall carvings Trajan Isis Horus Mandulis Egyptian Gods headdresses by approach water High Dam south side is visited either privately from Aswan or part of a Lake Nasser cruise. In both cases the approach is by motorboat being located on an island which is impressive with the pylon facing the landing berth and a large flight of steps. On the left is a small Roman kiosk called Qertassi dedicated to the Goddess Hathor and at the rear of the main temple is a small temple from Ramasses 11 period carved out of a rock face although again relocated from near the original site of Kalabsha, some 40 km upstream on the banks of the original River Nile. All these three sites would have been flooded following the creation of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960’s. This was taken in 2001 on my October trip to Egypt and the work in view has probably since been superseded by many other changes to the site. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days.
