Photos in this gallery are of Edfu Temple, one of the best preserved in Egypt, and usually the first first visit after leaving Luxor ona Nile Cruise.
Edfu Pylon Gate EG052241JHP Ancient Egypt Edfu Ptolemaic Temple Pylon Gate Solar Disc Ureaus is viewed from the south showing still the coloured symbols of the solar disc, uraeus, and wings under the lintel and is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Tut Golden Serpent EG11704JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit cobra Ureaus Gilded Gold Hood Tutankhamun Exhibition in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Luxor Carved Akhenaten EG9620911JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Library Photos Pharaoh Akhenaten Amenhotep Face Style was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. Tell Basta Cobra Frieze EG077103JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple cobra frieze granite carving ancient Egyptian site Delta is a large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Saqqara EG9511413jhp Ancient Egypt limestone Enclosure Step Pyramid ureaus cobra Zoser Saqqara dating from around 2500BC to the south of Cairo is the earliest stone built monument in Egypt and probably in the world and near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and was designed by Imhotep, one of the greatest minds in ancient Egypt and later deified as a God. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light. Valley Kings EG0213073jhp Egyptian Valley Kings Thutmosis Tomb KV43 Hathor ankh dress different patterns in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor which was robbed in antiquity and later restored by Horemheb through his official Maya. In the Tomb-Chamber is a red granite sarcophagus with still very brilliant colourful decoration as illustrated in the photo of the Goddess Nephthys. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases. Valley Kings EG0213047jhp Egypt Egyptian Tomb KV19 Montu-hir-Khopshef Sekhmet Sakhmat lioness painting colour was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well. Valley Kings EG0213043jhp Valley Kings Egyptian Tomb Prince Mentuherkhepshef Sekhmet painting solar ureaus colours was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well.
