Egypt Cairo Kan al-Khalili souk streets shops tourists Egyptians shopping crowded alleys a busy and often important site seeing stop-off for tourists to Egypt and offered as part of City Tour where many bargains can be picked up as part of that exotic shopping experience in an Arabic Bazaar. Bargaining is also part of the fun and is expected throughout so a new and often daunting experience for the traditional conservative British visitor. Better value can probably be obtained in Aswan or Luxor and certainly for those doing a Nile Cruise large, weighty or fragile items are best left to the last minute.

The pylon was later decorated in place by the High Priest Pinedjem, later a King and the columned court inside is attributed to the King Herihor.

The nicely decorated Temple of Opet or Apet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing and is located on the SE corner of the main Khonsu was mainly a Ptolemaic Temple and in practice dedicated to Amun who had by this time assumed much of the characteristics of Osiris. Like Khonsu itself is is well preserved, usually not very busy and a delightful escape from the crowded areas around the main Karnak site.

Karnak Temple Eighth Pylon Nectanebo Gate Sun Chapel Khonsu Viewpoint is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. Excellent views of the whole Karnak complex here the Eighth Pylon from the Sun Chapel at Temple of Khonsu, set to the south-west of the Karnak complex and is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing.

Ancient Egypt Noble Ramose Tomb Relief women beautiful banquet guests flowers, one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible.

Egyptian Luxor Tombs Nobles Nakht female harp player Tomb painted Relief is one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. The Nakht Tomb-Chapel is located in the Village area [Tomb 52] was the Astronomer of Amun during the reign of Thutmosis 1V around 1400BC. This was one of the first Tombs of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I was taken immediately by the colourful painted reliefs but difficult to photograph as the lighting was extremely limited and only properly lit small areas of a scene. The area around the Tombs has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Visits to these tombs tend to be privately organised rather than being part of a package tour but it is easily organised with a taxi from the East Bank hotels, payment for selected tombs is made at the ticket office beforehand near the Colossi of Memnon with the area being very close to the ticket office.

Photography certainly the last time I was in Egypt in 2007 had been banned in all the tombs so these photos although not very good technically are useful as a record of the nature of the tombs and especially their paintings. These images have not been sharpened during post production but will benefit from some USM sharpening prior to use. Hand held as no tripods were allowed and using slide film, Fuji 400asa, did not give great leeway to get decent photos, oh for my Nikon DSLR with 6400ISO. In this case I remember using a 80B Blue filter to try to counteract the very low grade tungsten lighting and because of the speed loss was using my 50mm f1.8 Nikkor lens wide open so had absolutely no Depth of Field to play with and a shutter speed of 30th second or less-really impossible to produce technically good images.
The hand reflected lighting used in some tombs causes a hot spot so nothing by way of a balanced light but it is daylight balanced. However being direct sunlight reflected off tin foil would probably being doing more damage to the paintings than a suitable wide angle flash with UV filter. Given that most of the paints used in these tombs is mineral based then actually either method would do no measurable damage. The Perspex sheeting, however inconvenient, and not a problem from memory in Nakht’s Tomb, is to stop the physical touching of the paintings accidentally or otherwise, by inquisitive hands or swinging backpacks, and is absolutely vital protection to preserve these invaluable unique irreplaceable paintings. Some of the obvious damage to the paintings is not all modern.

Luxor Temple ancient Egypt tourists visitors colonnade Court papyrus bud capitals columns located on the east bank of the River Nile at Luxor, Egypt is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues that greet the visitor at the entrance to the first pylon. Howver the Court of Amenhotep is considered to one of the marvels of the Temple because of its scale, preservation and style and played a major part in the annual Opet Festival or Feast visited by Amun-Re of Karnak. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days.

Egypt Alexandria city snapshot street scene clothes underwear market people shopping modern Mediterranean coast is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. This photo is a snapshot of modern local street life taken from the taxi as I drove around the City on a day trip. A few isolated ancient sites can be visited with some Greco-Roman ruins and archaeology. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours.

Egypt el-Lisht Pyramid Senusret collapsed mound mastaba desert sand casing Middle Kingdom site which also has the slightly better preserved tomb of Amenemhet 1 nearby. Access to Senusret’s pyramid is through a local village and agricultural land at the edge of the desert escarpment as is common with most of the pyramid sites south of Giza. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh

Ancient Egyptian Hawara Pyramid Fayyum Amenemhet royal tomb shafts oblong deep, at a site well to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. The tomb shafts adjacent to the entrance road our well constructed with smooth well finished walls and could have been for royal women rather as in Lisht and I understood from my guide that many items found were displayed in the small musuem at Karanis which has been closed since I visited it 1994.

Situated near a canal, an offshoot of the Nile it is possible that construction material was transported by water. Little is left of his mortuary temple and the valley temple accessed by a causeway is under ground water level. Mastaba’s and 22 tomb shafts for the royal harem were found on the west side.

This photo is of one of these shafts-apologies for the exposure on the foreground but one of the problems of slide film in the field, however the important part the construction of the shaft is shown clearly.

Philae Temple Egyptian God Bes Carving Dwarf Protection Pregnant Women at home of the Goddess Isis was established late in the history of Egypt being mainly Ptolemaic, eventually closing as a religious site around 550AD and being located on an island had remained remarkably untouched. Being relocated onto the Island of Agilkia on the River Nile near Aswan, to save it being flooded after the completion of the High Dam, it is perhaps one of the loveliest and most complete classic Egyptian temples to visit with a peaceful spirituality lacking in many of the land based sites.

Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

It was to have been converted into flats having fallen into disuse as a hospital given the costs of maintenance, H&S, Fire Regulations and of course the eradication of TB generally by modern medical advances. At the time of the fire it was in a very sorry state of disrepair. Originally opened in 1900 by Dr Lawson of Banchory as one of the earliest commercial sanatorium’s and with a design based on a German model, with a central granite tower, but mainly wooden construction with all rooms facing south for the sun while at the rear were the corridors and service rooms. Woman’s Land Army Memorial Clochan village Buckie snow sea winter Moray Firth Fochabers Crown Estate is situated just to the east of the village of Clochan, near Buckie, off the B9016 road from near Keith to Buckie on the North east Coast of Morayshire. The Memorial was the first and is still the only one dedicated to the Women’s Land Army which was formed in 1917 and continued on with even greater importance during WW2. This interesting and eye catching sculpture is the work of the Artist Peter Naylor and unveiled in 2012 by HRH Prince of Wales. This was the first snowfall on November 2017 and possibly showing some signs of weathering with its russet rust colour. From the site on the Fochabers Crown Estate it is possible to see the sea and across the Moray Firth to the distance mountains and hills of Easter Ross, Cromarty and the Black Isle.
