Aurora The Ley au7189ajhp
Scottish Aurora Borealis display rays red silhouette Ley tree winter February 1990 taken on the Harestone Road by The Ley tree to the west of Banchory taken at a corner layby opposite the entrance to the Ley Farm which I tended to use more as it was more convenient and this tree at the entrance gave a very striking foreground. This photo was from one of three films taken on the 16th-20th of February of which this is the 20th February after 22.00hrs UT hrs and is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. There was activity on the nights of the 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th and I found during the 90’s there were often displays several nights in a row as later photos will illustrate whereas after 2006 most displays seem only to last one night and often several months apart so a very different Solar Cycle I took this photo of the Aurora display using the Fuji RSP 11 35mm slide film rated as and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen at 1600asa, and exposed around the 15-20 seconds around the 20 I later settled on. Several of the photos show a subdued quality akin to the human eye and bare probably a more accurate representation of what is seen in reality.

These locations became my usual choices for most of the Aurora displays I photographed when living in Banchory throughout the early 90’s, as easily accessible from Banchory and with a clear light pollution free view to the North which meant that any clear night was spent watching the Northern skies for the tell-tale signs of a possible display, usually proceeded by an area of obvious brightness on the evening before the main display. It also gave easy access to Crathes Castle which featured a couple of times as different foreground to Aurora displays.

This photo was from one of three films taken on the 16th-20th of February, this one on the 17th after 21.15hrs UT and is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. Several of the photos show a generally poor level of activity and low light levels, not helped by the faster exposure time although to the human eye they bare probably a more accurate representation of what is seen in reality.

Deeside Aurora Borealis Neuk plane aircraft lights winter February Scotland 1990 taken on the Harestone Road by The Ley tree to the west of Banchory taken at a corner layby opposite the entrance to the Ley Farm which I tended to use more as it was more convenient and this tree at the entrance gave a very striking foreground. This photo was from one of three films taken on the 16th-20th of February, this was only one I took around 19.45hrs UT on the 16th suggesting some activity which never happened and is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. There was activity on the nights of the 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th and I found during the 90’s there were often displays several nights in a row as later photos will illustrate whereas after 2006 most displays seem only to last one night and often several months apart so a very different Solar Cycle I took this photo of the Aurora display using the Fuji RSP 11 35mm slide film rated as and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen at 1600asa, and exposed around the 10 seconds rather than the 20 I later settled on. Several of the photos show a generally poor level of activity and low light levels, not helped by the faster exposure time although to the human eye they bare probably a more accurate representation of what is seen in reality.

British Scottish Aurora Proton beam ray unique strange red light winter February 1990 taken on the Harestone Road by The Ley tree to the west of Banchory taken at a corner layby opposite the entrance to the Ley Farm which I tended to use more as it was more convenient and this tree at the entrance gave a very striking foreground. This photo was from one of three films taken on the 16th-20th of February and is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. This is porbably one of the most unusual events I photographed as the only sign of a display was this isolated beam of light, red to the eye, a hovering there for several minutes before disappearing without anyother activity. Susequently I have seen this type of structure described as a proton ray or beam rather than the normal electron charged rays of the more classical Aurora displays. I happened to speak to Andy Bradford who saw the same thing at Kincardine O'Neil, several miles to the west around the same time, 20.50hrs UT on the 19th February which ruled out one theory I had of a security light or helicopter pad landing light from Raemoir Hotel. Egypt > Valley of Kings Luxor (4 files)

Photographs of the Valley of the Kings from tomb interiors as well as exterior views of the valley including the tombs of Ramses 1V, KV 43 and 19.
Valley Kings EG0213076jhp
Egypt Luxor Thutmosis 1V Tomb KV43 steep interior passage steps in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor which was robbed in antiquity and later restored by Horemheb through his official Maya. In the Tomb-Chamber is a red granite sarcophagus with still very brilliant colourful decoration as illustrated in the photo of the Goddess Nephthys.
Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases.

Valley Kings EG0213063jhp
Egypt Valley Kings Thutmose 1V Tomb KV43 steep passageway inside in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor which was robbed in antiquity and later restored by Horemheb through his official Maya.

Bennachie Mid Mar 192710jhp
Bennachie Mar Aberdeenshire Corsindae beech trees gean blossom spring Scottish rural taken from the roadside on the Corsindae road heading north from Mid-Mar near Echt, past the Kirk with its Standing Stones and very typical of an Aberdeenshire rural scene as the winter goes and spring colours start to appear but with field borders of mature beech trees still bare of leaves. Bennachie Hill to the west of Inverurie by the River Don is a distinctive landmark in central Aberdeenshire with its unusual peak man made with its partially vitrified Pictish fort remains and easily accessed from a visitors centre on the Chapel of Garioch road between Monymusk and Pitcaple. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.
