Egypt > Abydos & Dendara (1 file)

Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara New Ticket Office eg075484jhp
Dendara Temple ticket office modern entrance recent ancient egyptian photo, located north of Luxor surviving as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. Photo is of recent excavations before entering the main site and is a bark or barque shrine.

Queen Merit-Amun Bust EG11811JHP
Egypt Cairo Museum Exhibit bust Queen Merit-Amun Ramasseum Rameses 11 in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

Egypt > Luxor City & Misc West Bank (1 file)

Images in this gallery cover modern Luxor, general agriculture and photos not specific to other groups such as the recent excavations of the Sphinx Avenue, the alabaster factory and workers and the residential houses bordering the various roads to the main sites. It also includes the balloon flights and views from the balloon.
Luxor West Bank EG947629jhp
Luxor Nile Balloons flight soaring Western desert landing hills Egypt after passing the several famous temples situated on the West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor. Apart from the main sites visited, in this general area are several Tombs of the Nobles which are usually privately organised visits but very well worth the time if you have a few days to spare in Luxor. The balloon flight illustrated here was in 1994 and there were only two although in later years these increased greatly in numbers. This trip took off from the front of Hatshepsut just after dawn, a cold and interesting crossing of the Nile in the dark and long before the modern road bridge and eventually landed in the desert where the Hilton Hotel put on a beautiful breakfast buffet. I understand in recent times the breakfast has come to a boxed meal probably eaten on the bus journey back to the hotel or cruiseboat.

Modern Egypt Delta North Town Street Traffic Cars Taxi People in the area near the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built for its Bubastis Temple Site which still remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages these sorts of town images are part of a private trip into the northern areas of Egypt part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well.

Government Ambush qwe8639jhp
Scottish Highlands Culloden battlefield centre moor flat ambush government forces site of the last pitched battle fought in the British Isles in 1745 where a short bloody fight saw the decisive defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s rebel army by the loyalist Hanoverian forces under the Duke of Cumberland and which was the Stuart’s last attempt to reclaim their throne. The site near Inverness overlooking the Moray Firth has a new National Trust for Scotland visitors centre, large carpark and all facilities to cater for the many thousands who visit this important place of Scottish history every year. Best perhaps seen on a moody stormy cloud covered day to get a feeling of the sense of brooding sadness that this crucial battle had on the Highlands and its relations with the rest of Scotland and England as this was by no means just a defeat by the ‘English’. An information board at this photo view describes how the government forces ambushed the retreating Highlanders with devastating effects at this point where stone walls where breached on the battlefield.
