This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx
Esna by Nile InfR EG021218jhp Egypt Esna Nile town waterfront cruise berth houses infra red is a well known berthing area on the River Nile waiting for access to the locks and if time allows there is a beautiful Ptolemaic temple deep in a hollow under the modern town building line worth visiting. The hypostyle hall is all that remains of one of the latest temples to be built in Egypt by Ptolemy V1 and V111 and Roman additions with recordings of most Roman Emperors mentioned to the last recorded being Decius c AD240. For me it has some of the loveliest intact columns, with great attention of the detail and still a hint of colour from the bottom to the top of these huge floral capitals where the craftsmanship leaps off every surface. Standing in its centre it is easy to imagine being in the symbolic creation of the original papyrus marsh. It is a temple not usually visited on the standard River Nile cruise tour package but used to be accessible if berthed alongside the town with a long delay to get through old single lock system expected as it is only a short walk from the waterfront; probably not so realistic these days. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins. The ghostly effect is not as pronounced as using the R72 filter which I used in 1998. Hawara Pyramid Labyrinth 6392EG07JHP Hawara Pyramid Labyrinth Vista Ancient Egyptian Buried Archaeology Photograph Overview from the south face and illustrates what little remains of the famous area described by Herodotus and Strabo at this site located near Faiyum, to the south of Cairo where it was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing.The Labyrinth was compared because of its extensive mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos and although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt of the so-called Black Pyramid at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. The Buchan province whose name means “land at the bend in the ocean” was underdeveloped but was developed as part of the enlightenment as landowners sought to improve their estates and the overall agriculture of the land. Nearby Cuminestown was one of the first founded in 1761 by Joseph Cumine and New Byth followed soon afterwards and later followed by other Central Buchan villages like Maud, Mintlaw and New Deer. Baby Adder Snake 0784UP34jhp Tanar Glen Deeside Scottish reptile summer adder snake young viper basking near Tanar House a Glen which is a popular setting for weddings and photographs by its loch a short walk from the well known Ballroom. Glen Tanar which lies to the south of Aboyne on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire North East Scotland. The Glen is now a very regularly visited place with Braeloine Centre with Ranger and Visitors’ Centre, holiday cottages, fishing and easy access to many easy walks through ancient Scottish Caledonian Pine Forest and is the main route to Mount Keen. I photographed the snake on the driveway entrance to the main house sunning itself on the stone chips. Granted to the Irvine family by Robert the Bruce has been under their care from 1323 to 1976, including Forest of Drum, a royal hunting park and the Old Wood with ancient oaks, geans and Caledonian Pines. Glen Buchat By River wyy6086jhp Glenbuchat River Buchat water fields Glen riverbank rural Strathdon Aberdeenshire where this charming glen is accessed off the A939/A944/A97 Ballater/Huntly road just at the entrance to a Historic Scotland maintained castle by the same name. It is open all the year round and is an unmanned property at which no entrance fee is applicable but there is a small carpark. Views of the Glen are seen from the top of the Castle northwards. The Glen itself has a delightful old Kirk which was a favourite of HM The Queen Mother and the road loops round the top of the glen and a traveller can exit the glen at Bellabeg further west along the A944, a continuation of the A97 which forks nearby southwards to Dinnet.
