Tut Burial Chamber EG117EJHP
Egyptian Museum Tut Exhibit Burial Chamber Shrine outer Tutankhamun tomb at Luxor. In the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

Giza Tomb Debhen EG024129jhp
Gizah Egyptian Central Field ancient Debhen Tomb interior sarcophagus empty in an area that lies roughly between the causeway of Menkaure and that of Khafre in which there are many old mastabas and rock cut tombs, some open to the public such as this one of Debhen and the most prominent of which is the Mastaba of Queen Khentkawes the last major Royal construction in the Giza complex. It is an area left to the individual to explore and has an eerie feel wandering amongst some grotesque eroded faces of limestone showing the natural damage that centuries of wind and blown sand can do to unprotected soft limestone. In this interior photograph because of the strong artificial light I changed the colour images to B&W as it shows up more clearly than the very orange colour cast digital images.

Giza Menkaure Pyramid EG024111jhp
Menkaure Mycerinus Pyramid Egyptian tomb limestone blocks entrance camel tourist, the smaller of the Gizah site monuments and built during his reign of 28 years from 2531-2504 and it is about half the size of the Great Pyramid, possibly because of a much more relaxed rule than his predecessors who exacted a high price on the society building their huge monuments. Alongside his pyramid are three smaller ones for his Queens, the larger for his chief queen, Khamerernebty 11. This is the North face of the pyramid with the entrance and the huge gash left by earlier more brutal attempts of accessing the burial chamber. Modern access is through the entrance in the course of unfinished granite blocks showing above the mound of soil.

Giza Tomb Sign EG050955jhp
Neferbauptah Tomb Giza notice sign board information entrance Egyptian cemetery, who was Iymerys son and a government official who held the title Steward of the Great estate like his father, and one of many private mastabas from the middle to late Dynasty V that make up the Western Cemetery near the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza with an interior painted wall relief in the tomb. Interior photography is difficult as flash and tripods are not usually allowed and interior lighting can be poor and gives inaccurate colour balances. This photo was taken in JPEGs whereas today I would always use RAW files and having the advantage of a tripod I would always use natural or even mixed light where possible thus avoiding flash hot spots; flash incidentally does not cause damage to the paintings despite many such claims and restrictions

Egypt Valley Kings Thutmosis Tomb KV43 star ceiling interior antechamber in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor which was robbed in antiquity and later restored by Horemheb through his official Maya. In the Tomb-Chamber is a red granite sarcophagus with still very brilliant colourful decoration as illustrated in the photo of the Goddess Nephthys.
Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases and this was a very difficult one to take becuase of the huge differences in light levels from the floor lighting to the ceiling and regettably was not taken in RAW file which would have offered more control in post production.
