Aswan Nubian Museum School EG052981JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum interior exhibit of Nubian school teacher and class in Nubia village design and decoration before flooding destroyed much of the Nubian lands and villages. Display inside this modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Cairo Khan al-Kalili EG072612jhp Egypt Cairo Kan al-Khalili souk streets shops tourists Egyptians shopping crowded alleys a busy and often important site seeing stop-off for tourists to Egypt and offered as part of City Tour where many bargains can be picked up as part of that exotic shopping experience in an Arabic Bazaar. Bargaining is also part of the fun and is expected throughout so a new and often daunting experience for the traditional conservative British visitor. Better value can probably be obtained in Aswan or Luxor and certainly for those doing a Nile Cruise large, weighty or fragile items are best left to the last minute. Ptolemaic Temple Gods EG051849JHP Deir al-Madinah Temple Reliefs Thoth Maat Anubis Children Carving Interior Wall is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

A SSSI it is a wonderful area for wildlife, has a long sandy beach stretching northwards from the river underneath huge cliffs and easy access ends at an area of huge rocks which delight children at low tide with rock pools full of fascinating marine life. This photo is of the cliff path from the village of St Cyrus nearest the Church with some late autumn colour and is one of two routes down to the beach. The cliffpath was started in 1882 by Mr George Ross, my great-grandfather. Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face. Bellfield Banchory up643465jhp Banchory children's climbing Scotland Deeside town Bellfield park summer September in this Aberdeenshire town some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland on the River Dee. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards along Royal Deeside to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen. Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face. In the distance are a symbol of modern Scotland, the relentess encroachment of wind turbines-wonder if they will be around in 2000 years time. Crathes Castle jkl9363jhp Crathes Castle spring daffodils children visitors Deeside Aberdeenshire Scottish holiday with first main view of this historic property and the building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Huntly Castle jkl7903jhp Huntly Castle winter trees children park playarea Aberdeenshire Scotland fort palace, the present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the River Deveron near its joining the Bogie at the town of Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.
