Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.

Dendara Temple basilica mammisi Nectanebo Hathor Tiberius hypostyle hall Egypt columns carved located north of Luxor survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. Evening view of west side of the site taken from the roof og the Nectanebo Mammisi looking over the coptic Bascilia to the main Tiberian hypostyle hall of Hathor faced columns with east gate and mudbrick enclosure walls to left. Figures in front of the temple and on the roof give an idea of the massive scale of tghe monument.

Lake Qarun Fayoum Egypt Ancient Ptolemaic Town Soknopaiou Nesos highview, also called Dimyah al-Siba, a Ptolemaic town dating through to Roman times built by with a substantial mudbrick enclosure wall partially buried surrounding the remains of a temple dedicated to Soknopaios, a form of the crocodile God Sobek. It is located in the western desert south of Cairo and is accessed by 4x4 from Faiyum and is often part of a desert trip including Qasr al-Saghah Temple. In this photo a group of archaeologists are inspecting the causeway on what was once thought to have been an island in the lake.

Ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic Temple Overview Deir al-Madinah Highview Photograph is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. The photograph is from the Qurnet Murai hill near the Amun Temple looking towards the mudbrick enclosure wall of the Ptolemaic Temple dedicated to Hathor and just beyond it to the right is the Chapel of Hathor.

Bani Hassan ancient Egypt cliff cliff-face highview fields River Nile crops trees offering thirty nine tombs along the face of a bluff above the River Nile some 20km south of Minya make Bani Hasan a special visiting place for its decorations along the themes of wrestling, battle scenes and the collection of taxes by the nomarchs of the Oryx Nome give some beautiful tomb paintings to view - unfortunately photography inside the tombs was absolutely refused when I visited. It is fairly steep climb to the tombs but is on a properly constituted path with well spread out steps as some of the photographs show and offers some fantastic views of the River Nile bending its way through a rich green fertile area of fields and farming.

Tanis Royal Tombs Necropolis Exterior Panorama Photo Ancient Egyptian Delta Site in Northern Egypt once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. This photo shows the Royal Tombs in their setting near the huge mudbrick enclosure walls that surround the site. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.

Egypt Red North Pyramid Sneferu Dashur entrance view desert steps Old Kingdom construction following the problems with his Meidum and Bent pyramids this appears to have been a well executed building programme with a successful outcome, the tallest of the Dashur pyramids and although robbed of all its limestone casing is considered the first of the ‘true’ pyramids to have been completed. Pieces of the pyramid’s capstone have been reconstructed and form a feature in what remains of the foundations of the Mortuary Temple on the east side.

Philae Temple Original Island River Nile Highview Beato Old Photo Albumen Print Egypt, dedicated to the Goddess Isis and here photographed by Antonio Beato, a Victorian photographer around 1890 and this copy is taken from his album called The Nile 1872. On its modern relocated site there is far more sense of it being on an island in a greater expanse of water and a viewpoint as close as this is no longer feasible.

Edfu Temple Pylon Highview River Nile Beato Old Victorian Albumen Photo Print is at a site located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon and was photographed by Antonio Beato, a Victorian photographer around 1890 and this copy is taken from his album called The Nile 1872. It is little changed from the modern situation as seen in identical viewpoints in the modern Gallery except that a large town now obscures the open view to the river in the Beato photo.

The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen.

Glenbuchat Castle roof top view Glen Strathdon Donside Aberdeenshire Scotland mock military house built in 1590 overlooking the River Don at one entrance into Glenbuchat and although of no great historical note has some fine examples of local masons workmanship with a feel of ‘solid grace and comfortable display’ and evidence of lavish interior expenditure with high quality interior ashlar work.
As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The property is accessed off the A97 Ballater/Huntly road and is open all the year round and is an unmanned property at which no entrance fee is applicable. Continuing along this road in the direction of Huntly Kildrummy Castle is the next property visited.

In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant.

Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside.
